Published: 06/17/03Robert E. Manigold Sr.CHAMPLAIN — Robert E. Manigold Sr., 77, of Hayford Road in Champlain, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 23, 1925, in Watertown, son of the late George and Theresa (Bushnell) Manigold. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a part of the Battle of the Bulge. He was an avid golfer and a member of North Country Golf Club in Rouses Point. He worked for Harris Corporation in Champlain for more than 21 years before his retirement in 1987. Survivors include his wife, Elaine (Worden) Manigold, R.N., of Champlain; a son, Robert E. Manigold Jr. and his wife Helen of West River, Md.; a daughter, Christine M. Mayer of Sarasota, Fla.; two grandchildren, David J. Mayer and Thomas R. Mayer of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, John and Mary Jane Derrigo of Watertown and George and Julie Kuzma of Colonial Beach, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by a brother, George Manigold, and a sister, Sally Gibson. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Clark Funeral Home in Champlain. Internment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Rutland, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the North Country. Clifford F. BatesPLATTSBURGH — Clifford F. Bates, 84, of Jabez Allen Road, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 2, 1919, the son of Fred and Catherine (Beyers) Bates. Cliff served 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in many locations in the South Pacific. He was one of the "Chosen Few", the survivors of one of the most brutal campaigns of the Korean War which included a 75 mile march through sub-zero weather from which he was awarded the purple heart. He was a member of the Chosen Few Association which keeps alive the memories of the brave men who served their country. Cliff retired from the military and attended George Washington University for two years. He then moved to Plattsburgh and completed his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree. Cliff was a elementary school teacher for 19 years in the Peru School district on the Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Cliff was a member of the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church, The CVPH Auxiliary and The American Federation of Teachers. He was a mason for 55 years and past master of the Clinton Lodge. Cliff married Ruth Stafford Hodges on Jan. 9, 1988. Cliff inherited a loving family. He and Ruth enjoyed a happy retirement that included travel and enjoying his family. Besides his wife, he is survived by a half brother, Fred Bates; five step-children and their spouses, Eileen and Jim Ross, Kathleen and Brian Finan, James and Suzanne Hodges, Susan and Raymond O’Dell and Jack and Debbie Hodges. His 11 grandchildren are Matthew, Nathaniel, Kristine, Adrienne, Heather, Michael, Raymond, Jessica, Brady, Melissa and Nicole. He also leaves many cherished friends and relatives. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, 127 Beekman Street. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service. Internment will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in the Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Shriner Children’s Hospital or to The Hospice of the North Country c/o R.W. Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901. The R.W. Enrico Henry BertoliPlattsburgh — Enrico Henry Bertoli, 94, of Bridge Street, Plattsburgh, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the Clinton County Nursing Home. He was born in Germany on May 21, 1909, raised in Maniago, Italy and came to the states at the age of 18 where he eventually owned and operated his own tile company. With the advent of the Air Force Base Mr. Bertoli and his family moved to Plattsburgh where he and Louis Defabbio opened Defabbio & Bertoli Tile Co. Mr. Bertoli was an avid gardener, hunter, wine maker and enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Antionette; son, Frank of Plattsburgh; a daughter, Madaline Grupper and her husband Al of New Jersey; a daughter, Alvera, who died at the age of 20; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Bertoli of Plattsburgh; grandchildren include, David and Jessica Bertoli of Plattsburgh, Vera Delorme and her husband Dale of Plattsburgh, Joanne Hildreth and her husband John of Massachusetts and Beth Grupper of New York City. Mr. Bertoli was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Adam, Joshua and J.D. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. with a service at 10 a.m. at the Brown Funeral Home. Floyd W. 0lcottTiconderoga — Floyd W. 0lcott, 79, of Summit Street, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the Moses-Ludington Hospital of Ticonderoga. He was born in Moriah, Aug. 25, 1923, the son of the late William and Mary (Parker) 0lcott. Mr. 0lcott was a Ticonderoga resident for most of his life. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Mt. Defiance Lodge 794 Free & Accepted Masons, both of Ticonderoga. Before his retirement, Mr. 0lcott was employed by NYS Environmental Conservation as a senior forester. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Constance C. (Abbott) 0lcott on April 1, 2003. He is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Dorgan of Glens Falls; two grandsons, Nicholas Dorgan of Buffalo and Patrick Dorgan of Glens Falls. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will take place Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin Street, Ticonderoga. The Rev. Paul L. Dufford Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga, will officiate. Interment will take place at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga. Hazel K. RooneyDannemora — Hazel K. Rooney, 104, passed on to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Peru on July 17, 1898, the daughter of John H. and Mary (Ahern) Downs. She was a school teacher for many years and was an active 76 year member of the Dannemora Catholic Daughters of America and the Dannemora Happy Mountaineers Senior Citizens. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. She enjoyed bingo and card playing, embroidering and receiving many cards and letters from her family and friends. Hazel will be long remembered for being all elegant lady with a passion for her Oil of Olay and dressing to perfection daily. She is loved and will he greatly missed by all who knew her. Hazel’s motto for life was "You can’t change yesterday, tomorrow is another day, you must move on". She is survived by her grandsons, Robert Hughes of Hughesville Pa., Thomas Hughes of Newport News, Va.; a great-granddaughter, Katherine Hughes; a great-great-grandson Ethan Hughes; several nieces and nephews, including Betty Hughes of Peru; several cousins; and two special friends, Anna Lucia and Beverly Casey. Her husband, John J. Rooney whom site married June 27, 1929, died on April 7, 1962. Her daughter, Charlotte Rooney Hughes, died in 1972. A nephew, Stanley Hughes, and four sisters, Beth, Jennie, Anna and Nellie, also predeceased her. Hazel and her family would like to extend their warmest thanks for the loving support of the Catholic Daughters, the Altar-Rosary Society, Fr. Bill Reamer and her many friends in Dannemora. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Members of the Catholic Daughters are asked to meet at the funeral home for services at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday from St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. Interment will follow in St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Peru. Annemarie V. OdellClinton Corners, NY — Annemarie V. Odell, of Clinton Corners, N.Y., died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at her home. She and her husband moved there in 1982 from Saranac Lake, N.Y. A registered nurse, she worked at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie until she retired in January 1993. Mrs. Odell was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in Rhinebeck, N.Y. She was born in Manhattan, N.Y., the daughter of Cyrille and Anne (Baxter) Verrier. On Jan. 31, 1954, at St. James The Apostle, Carmel, N.Y., she married Kenneth D. Odell. Mr. Odell survives at home. In 1949 she graduated from Aquinas High School in the Bronx, and in 1953 she received her nursing degree from Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Eileen Odell of Albany, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jim Guarino of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; a son, Kenneth J. Odell of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; a son and daughter-in-law, John D. and Rebecca Odell of Keene Valley, N.Y.; a sister, Bernadette Sells of Pawling, N.Y.; four grandchildren, James M. Guarino, Katheryn Odell, Patrick Odell and Ryan Odell; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Church of the Good Shepherd, East Market Street, Rhinebeck. The Reverend Lawrence Xavier will officiate. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Rhinecliff, N.Y. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 91 E. Market St., Rhinebeck. Prayers will be offered at 3:45 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Annemarie’s memory to the Stanfordville Rescue Squad, Route 82, Stanfordville, NY 12581 or a charity of your choice.
