Gerald R. Whitford

Rutland — Gerald R. Whitford, 53, died unexpectedly Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1949, in Ticonderoga, N.Y., the son of Bernard and Betty (LaBounty) Whitford.

He was educated in Moriah and Westport, N.Y., schools and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Army Reserve Unit in Rutland.

He was employed at one time as a mechanic for Smith Buick and the Army Reserve Garage on Allen Street in Rutland. He was most recently employed by Turtle Law Print before retiring due to failing health.

He is survived by his parents of Westport, N.Y.; a son, James Whitford of Cherry Point, N.C.; a daughter, Shasta Whitford of Keeseville, N.Y.; one sister, Lisa Whitford of Moriah, N.Y.; two brothers, Michael Whitford of Seoul, South Korea and David Whitford of Keeseville, N.Y.; his ex-wife, Sherry Spaulding of Pittsford; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Committal services will be held in Moriah, N.Y., at a later date.

Memorial contributions in Gerald's family may be made to the Community Cancer Center, 160 Allen Street, Rutland, Vt. 05701.

Arrangements were under the direction of Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford, Vt.

Alvin Maurice Lucas

Crown Point — Alvin Maurice "Bubba" Lucas, 54, of Buck Mountain Road, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his residence.

He was born in Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 22, 1949, the son of the late Alvie and Lucille (Glass) Lucas.

Mr. Lucas was employed locally as a handyman for many years. Most recently, he worked for The View Restaurant of Hague.

Mr. Lucas was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Westport.

Survivors include his wife, Lavina "Tiny" (Towne) Lucas; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Albert Towne Jr. and Margaret and LeRoy Goldup, all of Crown Point: and three nephews and one niece, Richard David II, Alice David, Albert Charles Towne III and Chad Towne, all of Crown Point.

Relatives and friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga.

A funeral service will take place Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Harry Sherman, High Councilman and Mark Kubricky, Branch President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will preside. Burial will take place at the family plot in Crown Point at a later date.

Katherine E Moore

Malone — Katherine E Moore, 61, of 101 Park Street, Malone, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

She was visiting her sister Diana Payne, in Theresa, N.Y., when she became ill and was taken to the hospital.

She was born Aug. 30, 1941 in Glens Falls, N.Y., to the late Edward A. and C. Austin Moore.

She graduated from Beekmantown High School, Beekmantown, N.Y., and attended SUNY Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Since 1993, Ms. Moore had been on leave from her job at USA Today due to disability. She was a founding editor of USA Today and began her employment there in the spring of 1982. Prior to that she had been executive editor of the Niagara Falls Gazette, Niagara Falls, N.Y., vice president of the Fremont Tribune, Fremont, Neb., and city editor of the Rockford Register Star, Rockford, Ill. Her career in journalism began in Plattsburgh, N.Y. with a job as a photographer-reporter for the Press- Republican. Ms. Moore was also a guest professor / editor of journalism at Kansas State University in Lawrence, Kan.

Predeceased by both of her parents. A marriage to the late Charles G. Brothers, formerly of Rouses Point, N.Y., ended in divorce.

Survivors include one daughter, Tammalyn K. Brothers of Moira, N.Y., five sisters,. Edna and Dan McCusker of Plattsburgh, Helen and Gary Mastin of Merrill, Diana Payne of Theresa, Donna and Dennis Cudworth of Chazy and Marilyn and Jeffrey Webber of Tampa, Fla.; three brothers, Edward Moore of Plattsburgh, Darwin and Darlene Moore of Tampa, Fla., Robert and Rhonda Moore of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Ms. Moore held various directorships in associations related to journalism. She was on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE), and the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME), and was a former President of the Nebraska Press Association. During her tenure there she successfully brought a landmark case in the area of Freedom of the Press to the Supreme Court of the United States, Moore v. Fremont Board of Education.

Ms. Moore passionately loved life and adventure and was an avid animal lover and naturalist and in that spirit she was an organ donor so she could give those opportunities and the gift of life to others.

She was a member of the Temple Beth-El, Rockford, Ill.

Contributions may be made to the local humane society or nature conservancy society.

There are no calling hours. The body will be cremated at Frederick Bros. Crematory, Inc., Theresa. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Temple Beth Israel Church in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., Theresa, N.Y.

Nathalia St. Denis

Plattsburgh — Nathalia "Tali" St. Denis, 82, of Rugar Street, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Plattsburgh on June 1, 1921, daughter of the late John Henry and Natalie (Demers) St. Denis.

Tali graduated from St. Peter's School. She retired from Plattsburgh State University College as the assistant to Dr. Nicholas Troisi. Tali was an active member of St. Peter's Parish. She was a member First Friday Club of which she was treasurer for several years, St. Peter's Altar Rosary Society and the Third Order of St. Francis. She served on the Liturgical Commission at St. Peter's. She was a member of and a daily communicant of St. Peter's Church. Tali was a weekly participant in adoration at the Regina Maria House of Prayer. She volunteered regularly at the Ecumenical Food Shelf. Tali made several Pilgrimages to Medugore, the Holy Land, and traveled extensively in Europe and Greece.

Tali is survived by three sisters, Sister Aline St. Denis of Newburgh, N.Y., Leah and John Nolan of Ticonderoga and Emma Rowell of Ridgewood, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy St. Denis of Plattsburgh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by four brothers.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 9, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, April 10, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. from St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The Third Order of St. Francis will meet for services at 3 p.m. The St. Peter's Altar Rosary Society are asked to meet at 7:30 p.m.

Pearl M. Brown, 96, a resident of the Franklin County Nursing Home in Malone since 2000 and formerly of River Street, St. Regis Falls, N.Y., died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the nursing home.

She was born in St. Regis Falls, on May 20, 1906, she was the daughter of the late William and Marcia Gordon Rockhill.

Calling hours will be in the Anderson Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls, on Wednesday, April 9, 2003, from 9 a.m. until time for funeral services at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with Father John Demo, pastor of St. Ann's Church, St. Regis Falls, officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery in St. Regis Falls later in the spring.

Everett H. Zemken, 83, of the Sand Road, Morrisonville, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born in the Town of Root, N.Y., on July 16, 1919, the sop of Alfred H. and Anna Bell (Palmateer) Zemken.

There will be no calling hours. Following cremation a memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on the Rand Hill Road in Morrisonville at a time to be announced.

Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.

Darby L. McMillan, 30, of Jane Lane, Plattsburgh, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center.

She was born in Plattsburgh on March 4, 1973, the daughter of Clarence E. and Terry (LaPorte) Shepard.

Calling hours will be Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 8:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at a later date in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
