Published: 03/31/03Roland W. BakerPERU — Roland W. Baker, 79, of Telegraph Road, Peru, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in AuSable Forks, Feb. 21, 1924, the son of Eddie Kerr and Salinda Mary (Besaw) Baker. Mr. Baker served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945. He married the love of his life, the former Florence L. King, Oct. 21, 1944, in Washington, D.C. She predeceased him Dec. 3, 1989. Roland drove a school bus for Keeseville High School for a time and more recently worked at the AuSable Valley Central School as a custodial supervisor. He was a member of the AuSable River Lodge F&AM #149 in Keeseville. He was a member of the Norco Shrine and was a Shriner clown. He also was a member of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, camping, bird watching, and especially giving his sons-in-law a hard time. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert W. Baker of San Diego, Calif., and Kenneth and Rita Baker of Chambersburg, Pa.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Marvin Stanley of AuSable Forks, Kathy and Gary Smith of Sheldon, Vt., and Linda and Steven Hatin of Milton, Vt.; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Baker and Genevieve Baker, both of Keeseville, and Ruth Jennison of Fort Washington, Md.; eight grandchildren, Laura Baker, Tim Stanley, Matt Stanley, James Baker, Jeffrey and Travis Hatin, and Tommy and Katie Dragon; four great-grandchildren, Marcus and Jonathan Baker, and Emily and Meagan Baker; and several nieces and nephews to whom "Uncle Rollie" was very special. He was predeceased by brothers, Howard and Roger Baker; and sisters Irene Ransom, Beatrice Irwin, and Joyce Rennell. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. Members of the AuSable river Lodge will meet at the Funeral Home for a 7 p.m. service. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Keeseville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sally White, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Peasleeville Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Howard D. WestcottUTICA — Howard D. Westcott, 78, of Utica and formerly of Plattsburgh, passed away Friday, March 28, 2003, at his home. He was born on June 4, 1924, in Utica, a son of William C. and Olive S. (Start) Westcott. He attended Utica Schools and graduated from New Hartford High School in 1942. Howard served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War II and was stationed in England. At Grace Episcopal Church, Utica, on May 18, 1946, Howard married Beverly L. Cramer. In 1955, Howard and Beverly moved to Plattsburgh and opened H.D. Westcott Auto Electric Company, which he operated until retiring in 1997. Howard and Beverly returned to Utica in 2001 to be closer to their family. Howard was active in the Civil Air Patrol, past commander of the U.S. Sail and Power Squadron of Plattsburgh, past commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-11 of Plattsburgh, Champlain Valley Amateur Radio Club Call Sign N2CYO, where he was actively involved with Iron Man in Lake Placid, Plattsburgh Lodge of Elks BPOE #621, the American Legion Post #20, and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Plattsburgh. Howard enjoyed boating in his youth at Wellsley Island in the St. Lawrence and in Lake Champlain throughout his years in Plattsburgh, skiing at Whiteface Mountain and after retiring spent time camping in the Adirondack Mountains and Myrtle Beach. Howard is survived by his wife, Beverly; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Timothy Cain, Marcy; a son, Mark H. Westcott, Baltimore Md.; three grandsons, Christopher, Daniel and Mitchell Cain, all of Marcy; and a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Cramer, Utica; and many special cousins, nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by a brother, Robert Allan Westcott. Mr. Westcott’s funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica, with services conducted by the Rev. George Greene. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are from 4 to 8 p.m. today. YoungAltona — Mr. Andrew S. Young, 80, of Forge Street, Altona, passed away Friday, March 28, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Altona, N.Y., on Sept. 7, 1922, the son of George and Ellen (Jordon) Young. Andrew was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 767 in Champlain, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Great Chazy River Veterans Memorial Post 1418, the Knights of Columbus Council 6136 of Mooers, a former member of the Altona Fire Department from 1951-1984 and Holy Angels Church in Altona. He enjoyed bowling, golf, hunting, fishing and gardening. Andrew retired as a welder from Harris Graphics in 1985. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Ellen Young; and his brothers, Alfred and Donald Young. Andrew is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen (McLaughlin) Young of Altona; a son, Christopher Young and his wife Kathryn of Rouses Point, N.Y.; a daughter, Diana Clark and her husband Wayne of Palmdale, Calif.; a brother, Bernard Young and his wife Shirley of Massachusetts; a sister, Palmina Boyd and her husband Robert of Altona; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Young and Irene Young; his grandsons, Eric Young and his wife Kimberly, Jason Clark, Devon Clark and his wife Lisa; a granddaughter, Kerry Young; a great-grandson, Jordan Clark; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Gerald Sayah of Altona. Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Altona. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Church, Altona. Interment with full military honors will be held at a later date at Holy Angel’s Cemetery. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1418 and the American Legion Post 767 are asked to meet Monday at 7 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home for services. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 6136 are asked to meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home for services. Friends wishing may make donations to Emergency Squad at the Altona Fire Department. RAYMOND A. BEDARD, 99, of Champlain, died Saturday, March 29, 2003. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Clark Funeral Home in Champlain. THOMAS F. HARVEY JR., 49, of Morrisonville, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt. He was born in Amityville on Nov. 16, 1953, the son of Thomas F. and Nancy (Ferretti) Harvey Sr. Arrangements are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. The R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh is in charge of arrangements. OLIVE E. SOULIA, 83, of Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone and formerly of East Main Street, Malone, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Alice Hyde Medical Center. She was born in Belmont on Nov. 9, 1919, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Atwood King. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church in Malone. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery later in the spring. Donations may be made to either the Franklin County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or to the Malone Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. HOWARD CARROLL MONETTE, 88, of St. Petersburg, Fla. and formerly of Malone, died Friday, March 29, 2003. He was born Aug. 12, 1914, in Malone, the son of Alfred and Theresa (Bean) Monette. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Notre Dame Church in Malone with the Rev. Shane Lynch officiating. Spring burial will take place in Notre Dame Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are through St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home Inc. |
