Published: 03/18/03Ethel M. JohnsonLewis — Ethel M. Johnson, 92, of Johnson Road, Lewis died Sunday, March 16, 2003 at her daughters home with her family at her side. She was born in Woburn, Mass., May 6, 1910, the daughter of Garfield R. and Corrine (McDermott) LaPlante. She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws, Dennis M. Johnson and his wife Linda and Rodney W. Johnson and his wife Susan; one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne C. Dubay and her husband Ronald; three grandsons and their wives, Michael and Susy Johnson, Peter and Holly Johnson and Brian and Marianne Dubay; five granddaughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Adam Fels, Cynthia and Marshall Phillips, Andrea and John Blades, Amy Johnson and Tracy Johnson and her husband Thomas Uhm; nine great-grandchildren, Montana Fels, Olivia and Claire Phillips, Katey, Zack and Casey Johnson, Colden and Carson Blades and Kylie and Anne Shufelt. Ethel’s family wishes to recognize and thank the many people who assisted Ethel in the final year of her life, especially the wonderful caregivers who made her comfortable, happy, and loved. They are April Denton, Laura Jaquish, Vesta Bill, Denise Bassett and Jan Moran. We were truly blessed. Ethel was a loving wife and mother, a kind and caring grandmother and an exceptional great-grandmother. Ethel set the standard of unconditional love for her entire family. To say that she was generous is quite an understatement. Ethel always thought about the needs of others before herself. There has always been some suspicion that gifts given to her have ended up making others quite happy. Her paintings, Christmas cards, pickles and jellies have been distributed liberally over a large geographic area. The U.S. Postal Service has lost one of its best customers. Ethel was a prolific letter writer and loved receiving mail (even the junk!) Becky, her current letter carrier, and she exchanged small gifts and greetings through the rural mailbox. It probably is a good thing that she never learned how to use the computer. It is highly unlikely the internet could have handled the volume of e-mail Ethel would have produced daily. Ethel had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and read a wide variety of magazines, newspapers, and books. She looked forward to the visits of the Bookmobile which supplied her with an eclectic mix of fiction and nonfiction. Many thanks to Bob Miller for the Bookmobile, cappuccino, and lunch runs. Ethel’s legacy is a family that understands nature’s awesome beauty and works to protect the environment. Children who seek to measure up to her standards and the great example she set for them. Grandchildren who have experienced her generosity and unconditional love and have learned to love others. Great-grandchildren who will learn for years to come the life lessons Ethel taught us. No calling hours will be held. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Lewis Fire Company; Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System Bookmobile; Chazy Central School Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are with W.M. Marvins Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.
