Albert Farbotko

WEST CHAZY — Albert Farbotko, 92, born Nov. 17, 1910, in Zaprozja, Ukraine, the son of Polish parents Jan and Urszula (Lukaszewicz) Farbotko, died peacefully surrounded by family in his home in West Chazy on Saturday, March 8, 2003.

Albert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Aleksandra Farbotko; three sons, Stanley Farbotko and wife, Lisa, Thomas Farbotko and wife, Sandi, and John Farbotko and wife, Linda; two daughters, Anna Sherman and husband, Rod, Wanda Esser and husband, Paul; also by his brother, Marian Farbotko, and sister, Zenia Lojka of Stargard, Szczecin, Poland. Predeceasing him were his brothers, Czeslaw Farbotko of Poland and Leopold Farbotko of Australia. He is also survived by grandchildren Helen Farbotko, Tammy Farbotko, Marisha Farbotko and Aleena Olarte and husband, Hamilton, Paul Sherman and wife, Tara, Jan and Adam Sherman, Thomas and Alison Esser and Brooke, Michael and Mathew Farbotko; and three great-grandchildren.

Albert served in the Polish Cavalry. During World War II, he was forced out of his home in Naliboki, Poland, by the Nazis, and into forced labor camps in Germany. Albert and his family spent seven years working in camps around Germany and Austria.

Upon American liberation Albert, his wife and four children came to the United States as displaced persons through the New York harbors. Albert came to this country from war-torn Europe in August of 1949 with his wife and young children through the support of Catholic Charities.

Leaving behind memories of horror and disaster in hopes of starting a new life here in America, Albert created a thriving family business, A. Farbotko & Sons, from a trade that he perfected at the side of his father and brothers in Poland. Known as a master of his trade, Albert not only trained his three sons in his trade but also those of many of his friends from Europe. As a stone mason, Albert’s fireplaces, buildings and churches warm the hearts of many in the North Country. He was known not only for his hard work but his enthusiastic way of celebrating life. He was a man who loved music and dancing, he enjoyed poetry and reading and loved discussing politics with anyone. Although the twinkle in his eyes is no longer visible to his family, his work ethic, family values and faith will remain.

Donations in memory of Albert Farbotko may be made to Catholic Charities or Association of Marian Helpers in Stockbridge, Mass. Calling hours will be at Walker’s Funeral Home, Plattsburgh from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be at St. Joseph’s Church in West Chazy at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
