Colin Kelley

Saranac Lake — Colin Kelley died at his home on Saturday, March 1, 2003, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

He was born on Sept. 10, 1942, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., son of Peter and Irene Kelley. He graduated from Keeseville High School in 1961.

Preferring warm weather and wanting a change of scenery, he moved to Boca Raton, Fla.

He enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1963. Upon his discharge in 1965, he returned to Florida and in 1967 moved back to New York to be closer to his family and to work for the New York State Department of Corrections. He retired as a sergeant in 1993, anxious to pursue other interests. By that time, he and his wife, Lorraine, were running a tour boat business on the Saranac River. In the summer of 1993, they started a tent rental business, "Lorraine’s Tents and Tours". The business quickly escalated into a highly successful party rental enterprise known as "Lorraine’s Tent and Party Rentals" with numerous tents and all the accessories necessary for spectacular events. It was Colin’s pride and joy, he put his heart and soul into every event.

Having sold the previous boat in 1998, he and his wife designed a new, larger one. They established a new tour company, "Scenic River Cruises", sailing daily from Riverside Park in Saranac Lake. Despite the illness, Colin loved being on the boat, cruising whenever he could. He often wore a shirt of his own creation that stated "Caution: Broken Neurons On Board". It was his own effort to increase awareness of this dreadful disease, all the while maintaining a great sense of humor. His positive attitude was a great inspiration to all.

Colin Kelley is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine, whom he married on Nov. 28, 1988. He is also survived by one son, Matthew of Lake Placid; two daughters, Amy Schuler of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Erin Schuler of Birmingham, Mich.; one grandson, Bryce Kelley; his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Pearl Kelley of Keeseville; one sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Robert Studebaker of Virginia; an aunt, Bernadette Lesperance; and several nieces and nephews, including his godson, Nicholas Kelley.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A bible vigil will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Bernard’s Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

To honor Colin, Tad Stoorza will ride his bicycle back to New York from Gunnison, Colo., in May in order to raise money for ALS research. The family requests contributions be made either to support that effort in care of Debbie Stoorza or the funeral home or to High Peaks Hospice in memory of Colin Kelley.
