Published: 02/28/03Catherine E. "Kitty" ValentinePlattsburgh — Catherine E. "Kitty" Valentine, 76, of Stetson Avenue, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at the home of her daughter Amy Valentine. She was born in Manhattan on Sept. 8, 1926, daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Wesley) Nuccio. Mrs. Valentine was an artist and water colorist specializing in flowers and the human figure. She studied at the Art Career School and the Art Student League in New York City and the State University of New York at Purchase. She was a member of the Westchester Art Society. For 17 years she taught art programs and watercolor painting at adult homes and nursing homes in Briarcliff and Plattsburgh. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Pleasantville for 47 years and for many years sang in the church choir. Douglas, her husband of 43 years and a veteran of World War II, died in 1990. Mrs. Valentine is survived by two daughters and a son, Catherine G. Valentine and her husband Paul Burgett of Rochester, Douglas Valentine and his wife Alice Valentine of Longmeadow, Mass., and Amy B. Valentine and her husband Richard Robbins of Plattsburgh; one granddaughter, Rebecca V. Robbins of Plattsburgh; two brothers, Charles Nuccio of Rhode Island and Joseph Nuccio of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Valentine will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Calling hours will be Saturday, March 1, 2003, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be Monday, March 3, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in North Tarrytown, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory made be made to Hospice of the North Country. Beulah M. WrightCHAZY — Beulah M. Wright, 91, of 1401 Lake Shore Rd., died Wednesday evening, Feb. 26, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 26, 1911, in Springfield, Vt., the daughter of Oscar S. and Mabelle (Maranville) Marshall of Danbury, Vt. Mrs. Wright attended the University of Vermont and Rutland Business College. Prior to her marriage to Loyal Wright in Chazy in 1934, she was the head bookkeeper at the former Northern New York Wholesale Grocery Company in Plattsburgh. During a four year sojourn in Germany, she was a bookkeeper in her husband's business office there. She was a life member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Friends of the Chazy Library and R.S.V.P. Among her volunteer activities, she served at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group and the Arthritis Foundation Group. Survivors include her husband, Loyal S. Wright; two daughters, Mrs. Wray (Carolyn W.) Duprey of Morrisonville and Mrs. Thomas (Mary Jane) Chalmers of Red Hook, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Michael Duprey, Sharlyn Wells, Melanie Anstett and David Duprey; six great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Mrs. Candace Hartshorn and Mrs. Eva Douglas, died earlier. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. Private funeral services will be held at the Funeral Chapel for the family. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Chazy in the spring. Donations in her memory may be made to the Bereavement Services at the CVPH Medical Center. Harold J. JarvisAltona — Harold J. "Yogi" Jarvis, 67, of the Forest Road, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at his home. He was born in Forest, N.Y., on Sept. 14, 1936, the first son of Clarence and Harriet (Burl) Jarvis. On Sept. 17, 1955, he married Betty Jane Perry at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Churubusco. He had a love of cars and motors. He worked for Meyers and Vievia Chevrolet in Ellenburg Depot and later went to work for Phil Taylor's Chevrolet for 30 years, until his retirement. Yogi is survived by his wife Betty; one daughter and son-in-law, James and Debra Carter of Ellenburg Center; three sons and two daughters-in-law, H. Gordon Jarvis of Ellenburg Depot, Michael and Deborah Jarvis of Mooers Forks and Todd and Sally Jarvis of Champlain; his grandchildren, Tori Carter, Christopher Jarvis, Logan and Taylor Jarvis and Rebecca and Adam Jarvis. He is also survived by one brother, Clayton Jarvis and his children Danny, Robert and Sharon; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Freeman LaValley of Mooers Forks and their son Steve, Linda and Gary Miller of Chazy and their children Kevin, Mark and Nicole; a sister-in-law, Linda and David Johnson and her children Norman, Tina and Perry. Yogi is also survived by his dog Susie, who was his best friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Jarvis and Harriet (Burl) Jarvis; one brother, Norman Jarvis and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Jarvis. Yogi was an avid NASCAR fan (Dale Earnhardt) and wouldn't miss a race. He was a member of the Adirondack Tractor Pullers Association and enjoyed watching and helping his son and nephews pull their vehicles. Yogi will be sadly missed by his family and everyone who knew him. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Ellenburg Depot. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday from Holy Angels Church in Altona. Interment will follow in Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Ellenburg Depot. Alberta Napper DarbyNewport, VT — Alberta Napper Darby (Bertie), 79, of Derby Line passed away peacefully with her family, in Newport on Feb. 25, 2003. Bertie was born on Oct. 7, 1923, in Saranac, N.Y., the daughter of Christina White Napper and Charles Napper. She attended Green Mountain College and graduated from American University in 1943. She taught at Derby Academy from 1943 to 1946. On Sept. 15, 1945, she married Robert Darby, who she met at Green Mountain College. From 1960 until 1981 she taught at Newport High School, Derby Academy and North Country Union High School. She served on the Derby School Board and the committee to develop a union school. She was Vermont Teacher of the Year in 1981. One of her greatest joys was seeing students accomplish goals they thought were impossible. After retirement she acted as Guardian ad litum for several years. She served on the Derby Green Nursing Home Board, Area Agency on Aging and was an active member of Stanstead South United Church. She served as secretary of Congregation and President of Canusa. Bertie is survived by her devoted husband Robert of 57 years. She is also survived by her three daughters, Tina Routhier and husband Ray of Derby Line, Ruth Gray and husband Keith of Derby and Sue Kearney and husband Peter of Cape Coral, Fla.; as well as the following grandchildren, Kristi Hudson and husband Dan, Amy Stimets and husband Jon, Melissa and Cy Nelson, Erica and Trevor Gray, Kyle and Meghan Hildebrand, Alison and Caitlan Kearney; and great-grandchildren, Emily and Nathan Hudson; a brother, Charles Napper of Saranac, N.Y.; a sister, Candace Marshall of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Napper, in 1969. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at the Curtis-Britch Converse - Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport (formerly Sias Ave). A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring. Mary EhmenKissimmee, Fla. — Mary Ehmen, 61, of Kissimmee, Fla., and formerly of Saranac, N.Y., died Feb. 25, 2003, after a long illness. Mary was born on Oct. 25, 1941, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Ernest Connell and Edna (McLean) McKee. She recently retired as executive director of Donegan Square Assisted Living Facility of Kissimmee, Fla., after 20 years of service. Mary is survived by here three children, Timothy Alexander of Clayton, N.Y., Kelley Alexander and her companion Arthur Bunker of Saranac, N.Y., and Douglas Alexander of Saranac, N.Y.; four grandchildren, David Bunker, Doug Alexander Jr., Donald Alexander and Nickolas Bunker. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Charles Ehmen; a brother, Richard Connell; and former husband, Harold Alexander. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Helen Kourofsky, 80, of Dannemora, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. Arrangements were incomplete Thursday evening at the O'Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. |
