Published: 01/18/03Herbert C. LongDaytona Beach, Fla. — Herbert C. Long, 93, of Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at his home, under the gentle care of his family. Herbert was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Nov. 8, 1909, the son of William and Maude (Butler) Long. During World War II, he served in Italy with the 98th Bomb Group. He dearly loved his country throughout his life. Herbert enjoyed hunting, camping and traveling with his family. For many years, he and his wife Dorothy were active members in the North Country Squares Dance Club. In recent years and right up to eight weeks ago, he derived great pleasure from working everyday in his shop. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles 4033 in Daytona, Fla.; the American Legion 1619 in West Plattsburgh, N.Y.; I.E.B.W. Workers 781 of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; I.B.E.W. Retirees Assoc. 781 of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and I.B.E.W. Retirees Assoc. 756 of Daytona Beach, Fla.; VFW 1590 of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks 2723 of Port Orange, Fla.; the Loyal Order of the Moose 1263 of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and formerly a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shriner of Albuquerque, N.M. He also was a former member of the Cadyville Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Dorothy (St. John) Long; and nine children and their life partners, William and Gloria Long of Albuquerque, N.M., Yvonne and Lamont Smith of Richfield Springs, N.Y., Robert Long of Schenectady, N.Y.. Roger and Darlene Long of Peru, N.Y.. Marjorie Millea and Ray Heatherton of Plattsburgh, N.Y., George and Mitsuko LaVarnway of Appling, Ga., Dennis and Patricia LaVarnway of Morrisonville, N.Y., Linda Penders and David June of Kissimmee, Fla., and Richard LaVarnway of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and many grandchildren and great - grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Stanley Long; three grandsons, David, Ricky and Tommy; and a great-grandson, Michael. Calling hours will be on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh, N.Y. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Church in Cadyville, N.Y. Burial will be in the spring, also in Cadyville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Cadyville Volunteer Fire Department. Sherman Norris CroweTiconderoga — Sherman Norris Crowe, 72, of The Portage, passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Hartford, Conn., on June 25, 1931, the son of the late Sherman and Lottie (Wilson) Crowe. Mr. Crowe was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a Ticonderoga resident for most of his life. He was employed by the International Paper Company of Ticonderoga for 43 years and was a member of the company's Quarter Century Club. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Shirley M. (Fleury) Crowe; two sons, James S. Crowe of Berwick, Maine, and Kenneth J. Crowe of Ticonderoga; two daughters, Lee Anne M. Whitford and Lynn J. Kerr, both of Ticonderoga; four brothers, Richard Crowe, Dale Crowe, John Crowe and William Crowe, all of Connecticut; and two sisters, Helen Pellitier of Vermont and Dorothy Berry of North Carolina. He is also survived by many grandchildren; six great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. A funeral service will follow on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Marjorie J. Floor, pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Cross of Ticonderoga, will officiate. Elzear Joseph MadoreTupper Lake — Elzear Joseph Madore, 91, of 12 Mountainview Ave., Tupper Lake, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the Adirondack Medical Center. He was born on Dec. 30, 1911, in Tupper Lake, the son of Urgelle Luc and Ella Elise (Caron) Madore. A graduate of Holy Ghost Academy, Elzear began a life of many years in giving faithful and dedicated service to many people and organizations. On May 29, 1933, he and Josephine Booking of Tupper Lake were married. They shared their lives and built their home on Mountainview. Josephine died in 1966. A U.S. Army veteran, Elzear served from 1942 to 1945, seeing service in Europe as a staff sergeant quartermaster supply technician. He received two Battle Stars and a Certificate of Merit while serving in Germany. On Jan. 8, 1969, he and the former Thelma Duval of Fairfield, Idaho, were married at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake by Msgr. Brunet. He was a life long member of the American Legion Post 0220 and the VFW Post 3120. His career in Rotary included being past president and receiving the Paul Harris Fellow award in 1990. Elzear worked faithfully with Ginsberg's Department in the men's clothing department for 50 years, retiring in 1978. His commitment as a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus had him holding various offices during a time while many programs were put into action to further the ideals of the Great Order of the Knights. Elzear served as Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Faithful Navigator and President of the Home Association. In 1978 he received the Knight of the Year award. A communicant of St. Alphonsus Church, Elzear served as trustee, president of the Parish Council, president of the Cemetery Association and Special Minister of the Eucharist. As an HGA alumni, he co-chaired the celebration of the Golden Anniversary of the Sisters of the Holy Ghost. He was also instrumental in the success of the annual HGA benefit auctions. Elzear is survived by his wife Thelma of Tupper Lake; his stepson, Robert Barker of Utah; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren of Utah; and one sister, Delia Connor of Tupper Lake. Also two brothers, Lawrence Madore of White River Junction, Vt., and George Madore of Gloversville, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Wilfred and Edgar; and three sisters, Dorothy Richer, Bernadette Delair and Hazel Dow. Calling hours for Mr. Madore will be held Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. that evening at the Richer Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. At St. Alphonsus Church. Burial with full military honors will be announced in May to be held at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Memorials may be considered to St. Alphonsus Church or to any Rotary civic project. Charles J. Wemette Sr.Malone — Charles J. Wemette Sr., 74, of 142 College Ave., Malone, N.Y., died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at his home. He was born in North Bangor, N.Y., on March 30, 1928, the son of the late Clarence and Agnes (Hurteau) Wemette. He graduated from Brushton-Moira High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until 1946 and was honorably discharged. He graduated from Adirondack Business School in 1947. On May 24,1952, he was united in marriage to the former Eileen T. Tavernier at Notre Dame Church in Malone by the late Msgr. Arquette. She survives. Mr. Wemette was employed by Aloca in Massena, N.Y., from 1950 until 1959. He then was employed as a car salesman for Eldridge and Mason in Malone, from 1959 until 1972 and for S & S Auto in Malone from 1972 until he retired in 1995. He was a member of the Malone Lodge of Elks and the Malone American Legion. He enjoyed fishing locally and in Canada and also enjoyed hunting. Along with his wife Eileen, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Angela Wemette Jr. of Malone; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Hal Stanton of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Lynn and Stewart Tulip of Beekmantown, N.Y.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leon and Joyce Wemette of Orlando, Fla., and Lee and Joyce Wemette of Whippleville, N.Y.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lila and Robert Jock of Brushton, Aileen and Robert Neal of Massena, N.Y., Kathleen and Tom Parker of Vero Beach, Fla., and Jean and Anthony Orlando of Rochester, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Marie Wemette of St. Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren, Valerie and Luke Wemette, both of Malone, Ian and Alicia Stanton, both of Plattsburgh and Slade and Kyle Tulip, both of Beekmantown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Glenford Wemette in 1934 and Lyle Wemette in 1992. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church in Malone, with the Rev. Shane Lynch officiating. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in the spring. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association. Robert F. HughesPeru — Robert F. Hughes, 86, of Apple Valley Senior Housing, Peru, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Yorkville, July 27, 1916, the son of Robert J. and Mamie L. (Wilson) Hughes. Mr. Hughes retired from Pepsi-Cola of Keeseville in 1981 following 20 years of service. He also worked for several years after his retirement for the AuSable Chasm Co. Survivors include his companion, Carmen Ziobro of Plattsburgh; three daughters and one son-in-law, Carol and Robert Eberley of Whitesboro, Barbara Porter of Peru and Marilyn Coppi and companion Robert of Peru; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Nancy Hughes of Valcour; one brother, Edgar Hughes of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Leona of Whitesboro; two sisters-in-law, Marian Weiss of Marcy and Margaret and Robert White of Belton; and several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Rachel H. Hughes; and a sister, Irene. At Bob’s request there will be no public services. Donations in his memory may be made to the Peru Rescue Squad. Arrangements are with the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. Walter Merton PhillipsMorrisonville — Walter Merton Phillips, 61, of Shingle Street, Morrisonville, died Jan. 17, 2003, at his home under the loving care of his family, friends and Hospice of the North County. He was born in Glens Falls, N.Y., on Oct. 19, 1941, the son of Merton B. and Florence (Howard) Phillips. Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1959 to 1965. He worked most of his life driving tractor-trailer trucks and managing trucking companies, most recently the Plattsburgh office of Fort Edward Express until February 2002. Both Walter and his wife Shirley owned and operated "Mr. Limo" for the past six years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge 2390, American Legion Post 1619, VFW Post 125 and the Morrisonville Community Church. Walt was an avid golfer and reader. Walter is survived by his wife of 29 years, the former Shirley Strong; his son Ian and his wife Amy of Duanesburg; two step - daughters, Barbara and her husband Robert Baker of Cadyville and JoAnna Gonyeau of Chesapeake, Va.; his parents, Merton and Florence Phillips of Peru and Newcomb; his mother-in-law, Mertie Strong of Willsboro; two sisters, Elizabeth and her husband Guy Rotz and Cathy Phillips of Peru; two brothers, John and his wife Kim of Peru and James and his companion Becky of Cambridge, Vt.; a sister - in-law, Leanora Phillips of Peru; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter was predeceased by his brother, Donald Phillips, in 1994. Calling hours will be Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Morrisonville Community Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Morrisonville Community Church Fund or Hospice of the North Country. Shirley L. Peacock, 74, of 18 Scott Drive, Malone, N.Y., died Friday morning, Jan. 17, 2003, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone. She had been admitted on January 16th. She was born in Malone on Dec. 27, 1928, the daughter of the late Raymond and Emma (Ashlaw) LaBarge. Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church with the Rev. Tom Moody officiating. Burial will be in St. John Bosco Cemetery in Malone in the spring, Theresa E. Brooks, 74, of Standish, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. Arrangements were incomplete Friday evening at the Lyon Mountain Funeral Home. Blanche M. Collins, 88, of the LaValley Road, Mooers, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Indian Orchard, Vt., on Sept. 3, 1914, the daughter of Michael and Cornelia (Dubuque) Borrie. Calling hours and funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Mooers. Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. |
