Published: 01/10/03Joseph VartuliWitherbee, N.Y. — Joseph Vartuli, 83, of Witherbee, N.Y., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y. He was born on April 18, 1919, in Witherbee, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Raffaela (Pagano) Vartuli. Joe retired this past December as building code enforcement officer for the Town of Moriah. He operated Vartuli's Barbershop in Witherbee for many years. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member and past chief of the Mineville - Witherbee Fire Department and a member and past commander of the Mineville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5802. He is survived by three sisters, Mary Sines of Hudson Falls, Angeline Curran of Queensbury and Marie LaTour of Hudson Falls; also by many nieces and nephews. His wife, Elberta (Durand) Vartuli, died July 29, 1998. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Church of All Saints in Mineville. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Elizabethtown in the spring. Memorial donations may be made in Joe's name to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad. Gerwood Russell LawrenceClintonville — Gerwood Russell Lawrence, 91, of Route 9N, passed away, Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, where he has shared a room with his wife since Sept. 3, 2002. Gerwood was born in Clintonville on Jan. 3, 1912, the son of Edgar and Charlotte (Craig) Lawrence. From 1943 to 1956, he operated a farm located at the intersection of the Port Douglas Road and the Mace Chasm Road near Keeseville. He then moved to Clintonville where he and his wife resided until September when illness caused them to move to the nursing home. From 1956 to 1990, he was employed for Torrance & Trumbull in constructing and renovating homes. Upon retirement he tended several flower gardens in the area. He enjoyed bowling and belonged to a team in AuSable Forks. He was a member of the Keeseville Knights of Columbus and officiated at their bingo games. He was also a member of St. Catherine’s Church in Clintonville and after its closure became a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Keeseville and served as an usher. He is survived by his wife, Sybil (Minogue) Lawrence, whom he married Nov. 7, 1934; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Susan Lawrence of Plattsburgh and Cape Coral, Fla.; his grandson and his wife, David and Sally Lawrence and his great-grandson, Kentaro Samuel Lawrence, all of Mountain View, Calif.; his sister, Leola (Mrs. Joseph Cumm) of Whallonsburgh; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Lawrence of Clintonville and June Lawrence of Plattsburgh; a brother-in-law, James Minogue of Clintonville; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Gerald and Prescott Lawrence; and a sister, Gladys McElroy. Calling hours were held on Wednesday at the Zaumetzer - Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks. A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Keeseville. Burial will be at a later date in Holy Name Cemetery, AuSable Forks. Donations in his name may be made to the Keeseville Rescue Squad or to the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home, Plattsburgh. Noella B. Chauvin, 63, of 2783 Military Turnpike, Beekmantown, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center. Noella was born in Mooers Forks on March 31, 1939, the daughter of Floyd and Gertrude (Snide) Barcomb. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in the spring. ROBERT "PAT" VAN VALKENBURG, 63, of the Hazen Road, Jay, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, where he had been a patient since Dec. 20, 2002. He was born March 17, 1939, in Peru, the son of Herman and Inez (Nelson) Van Valkenburg. Calling hours were Thursday at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home, AuSable Forks. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the family plot in Jay Central Cemetery, Jay. Pete Caporale, 88, formerly of the Hallock Hill Road, Peru, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at The Fireman's Home in Hudson, N.Y. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. Orville E. Marello, 87, of Petrova Avenue, Saranac Lake, N.Y., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the Franklin County Nursing Home in Malone, N.Y. He was born in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Oct. 8, 1915, the son of Joseph and Lucy (Pratt) Marello. Calling hours will be at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A veteran’s service will take place at 7:45 p.m. followed by a Bible vigil service at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard’s Church. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake in May. |
