Karl E. Whitford

MORIAH, N.Y. — Karl E. Whitford, 70, lifelong resident of Moriah, passed away on Dec. 11, 2002.

He was born in Moriah on Dec. 31, 1931, to the late Perl and Harriett (Brown) Whitford.

Karl was a Korean War veteran of the 555th Field Artillery Battalion. His battalion was involved in a conflict remembered as one of the worst massacres of the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two bronze Service Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation (ROK) 29 (Dec. of 53), United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

After honorable discharge from the Army, he worked for the New York State Conservation Department then on to the New York State Department of Transportation, where he served for 30 years.

Karl was also former president and member of the South Moriah Cemetery Association and trustee of the Moriah United Methodist Church.

He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed for his endless vegetable garden that supplied many in the neighborhood, his caring, generous nature and his humor. But most of all, he will be remembered for the love of his treasured grandchildren Karli, Jeremy, Matthew, Shawn, Cassandra, David and Dustin.

Karl is survived by his wife, Dorotha (Martin) Whitford; his son and daughter - in - law, Steven and Diana Whitford of Arizona; his daughter, Sandi Whitford of Arizona, daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and David Tesar of Moriah, daughter Amy Whitford of Moriah; and his seven grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Addie Pattison of Moriah; brothers Bernard and his wife Betty of' Westport, Harold of Ticonderoga, Leon of Port Henry and Charlie and his wife Anna of Moriah; and predeceased by brother Donald and his surviving wife Darlene of California.

Memorial services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17th, at the Moriah United Methodist Church. There will be a gathering at the Moriah Firehouse immediately following the church service.

Marilyn L. Brinton, 62, of Second Street, Port Kent, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, Vt.

Callings hours will be held Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Keeseville.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at a time to be announced. A complete obituary will be in Monday's Press-Republican.

Gladys S. Dow, 88, of State Route 95, Bombay, N.Y., died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, N.Y. She had been a patient there since Dec. 12th.

She was born in Helena, N.Y., on Nov. 13, 1914, the daughter of the late Vern and Rose (Woods) Yaddow.

Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home in Fort Covington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Bombay, with the Rev. Kris Lauzon and Rev. Scott Fobare officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Brushton.

Vernon P. Gray, 100, of Rt. 2, Keenan Road, Brasher Falls, N.Y., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena, N.Y., where he had been a resident since Oct. 25, 1996.

He was born in Brasher, N.Y., on June 28, 1902, the son of the late John and Frances (Flanders) Gray.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home in Fort Covington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Hogansburg, N.Y., with the Rev. Kris Lauzon officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Hogansburg.
