Published: 12/04/02Charles F. PeischlPLATTSBURGH — Charles F. Peischl, 82, of 25 Edgewater Estates, Plattsburgh, N.Y., formerly of Nazareth, Pa., died at his home on Dec. 1, 2002, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 8, 1920, in Nazareth, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Katharina (Zeiner) Peischl and was proud to be first generation in America from Austrian-Hungarian descent. He attended Nazareth High School and received a bachelor's degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa. A World War II Army veteran, he served with the 56th Armored Infantry Battalion, Company B, 12th Armored Division on the western front in Europe. Their battles included, Herrlisheim, Colmar, Rineland, Dilligen and Landsberg. During Lt. Gen. George S. Patton's drive to the Rhine River, Lieutenant Peischl was the first combat officer of the Allied Forces, to lead his platoon to reach the Rhine on March 20, 1945. Commissioned on the battlefield as a 2nd Lieutenant, he retired from active duty, as a 1st Lieutenant in May 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. Following his discharge, he was employed at Luria Steel, Bethlehem, Pa., and served as the service manager at Seyfried Motors. Inc. and R.F. Ziegler, Inc. in Nazareth, Pa. Later, he taught auto mechanics at Eastern Northhampton Vocational Technical School in Easton, Pa., and retired in June 1983 as the coordinator of the Cooperative Education Program. From September 1981 to August 1982, he served as a volunteer at the Moravian Medical Mission in Ahuas, Honduras. He was elected to the Upper Nazareth Township Board of School Directors and served on the first board of school directors consolidated Nazareth Area School District. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nazareth, Pa., Elks Lodge 621, Plattsburgh, N.Y., and the 12th Armored Division Association. Charlie enjoyed camping, reading, solving crosswords, helping others, working outdoors, especially with flowers, and enjoying the good life of winters in Florida. His hobby was a passion for finding and refinishing antiques, caning old chairs, making hand-woven footstools, teaching his craft to others, but his greatest joy was giving them away to family and friends, especially his beloved grandchildren. His love of the beauty and magic of Lake Champlain was appreciated by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Rita Ryan Jarvis, whom he married July 30, 1983; his children, Charles J. (Gwyneth) Peischl of Nazareth, Pa., James (Barbara) Jarvis of Champlain, N.Y., Lynn (Thomas) Howard of Morrisonville, N.Y. and Sister Gail Anne Jarvis, RSM of Winooski, Vt.; six grandchildren, Kara (Brian) Zidek of Media, Pa., Jonathan (Stefanie) Peischl of Mission Viejo, Calif., Michelle (Mark) Bonczkowski of Schenectady, N.Y., Danielle Howard of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Jessica Howard of Morrisonville, N.Y., Christy Jarvis of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and one great-grandchild, Caroline Zidek of Media, Pa.; two sisters, Teresa Narlesky of Bethlehem, Pa., and Kathryn Tanzosh of Nazareth, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia Free, who died Dec. 4, 1980; three infant children; two brothers, Frank and John; and two sisters, Margaret and Rose. At Charlie’s request, there will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Cumberland Head Road, Plattsburgh, N.Y., and a memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at St. John's Evangelical Luthern Church, Nazareth, Pa. Private interment services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Nazareth, Pa., at the convenience of the family. Clark Funeral Home, Inc., Champlain, N.Y. is in charge of the arrangements in New York, and the Reichl Funeral Homes, Inc., Nazareth, Pa., is in charge of the arrangements in Pennsylvania. Jesse Terryausable forks — Jesse Terry, 84, of the Golf Course Road, AuSable Forks, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at his sons home on the Silver Lake Road, AuSable Forks. He was born April 19, 1918, in Harkness, the son of Mitchell and Eva (Baker) Terry. He was a carpenter by trade employed by Adrian Edmonds Construction Co. and Baird Edmonds Construction Co., both of Keene Valley, James Aubin Construction Co., of Jay, and Bassett Mt. Recreational Center, Jay. Jesse served as Justice of the Peace for the Town of Black Brook for 28 years. He also was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, AuSable Forks. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Roslyn and Al Fadden of Rochester; two sons, David & Matthew Terry of AuSable Forks; several foster children; a brother, Carl Terry of AuSable Forks; two sisters, Shirley LaHart of Lake Placid and Barbara Carnes of AuSable Forks; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His wife, Corrine Terry died Jan. 3, 2001. Several brothers and sisters, also predeceased him. Calling hours will be Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home, AuSable Forks. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Church, AuSable Forks. Burial will be at a later date. Milton "Mickey" Daniel LaForestALTONA — Milton Daniel LaForest, 61, of Altona died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at his home. Milton was born March 1, 1941, in Chaplain, N.Y., the son of Henry and Laura (Baker) LaForest. He served in the United States Navy from 1960-1964, worked as a truck driver for Anchor Motor Freight in Champlain, N.Y. for several years and then for Allied Systems in Dallas, Texas. Milton is survived by his ex-wife, Aphrodite LaForest of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; his sons, Pascali LaForest of Salem, N.H., Henry LaForest II and his wife of Saranac, N.Y., Vasso LaForest and his wife of Cadyville, N.Y., Michael LaForest and his wife of Louisville, Ky.; his seven grandchildren, Kathryn, Nikkole, Zachery, Taylor, Courtney, Kristen and Garrett; his brothers, Leon LaForest and his wife, Bernard LaForest, Melvin LaForest and his wife, Vernon LaForest and his wife; his sisters, Harriet Smart, Marilyn Warnock and her husband; brother-in-law, George Tallman; sister-in-law, Rita LaForest; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Laura LaForest; his brothers, Adrien LaForest and Clarence LaForest; and by his sisters, Ella LaFountain and her husband and Doris Tallman. Josephine Mary (Neumaier) HurleyElizabethtown — Josephine Mary (Neumaier) Hurley, 94, of Elizabethtown died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital. She was born May 19, 1908, in New York City, the daughter of Bernhardt and Antonia (Horn) Neumaier. She and her husband Wesley Hurley were married on Nov. 21, 1925, and just recently celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary together. Josie was a faithful member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, serving as the Alter Guild President for over 30 years as well as being a member of the Ladies of the Good Shepherd. She was a member of the Elizabethtown Hospital Auxiliary and in May 2002 was recognized for her many years of service. Josie enjoyed volunteering at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, unselfishly giving of herself for over 25 years. She was a long-standing member of RSVP and the Senior Circle and was honored as senior citizen of the year in May 1991. Josie and Wesley participated in and volunteered at the Elizabethtown Nutrition Meal Site every Friday for many years. Josie is survived by her husband, Wesley; one daughter and son-in-law, Marcella and Steve Denton of Elizabethtown; one son, Rodney Hurley of Plattsburgh; her grandchildren and spouses, Tammy and Robert Sawyer of Bunnell, Fla., Anita and Stephen Hall of Keene Valley, Stephen and Suzanne Denton of Elizabethtown, Randy Hurley, Greg and Linda Hurley of Plattsburgh, Sherri and William Flock of Tipp City, Ohio, Karen and Mark Brinkman of West Palm Beach, Fla. Linda and Tom Dobkowski of Liverpool, N.Y. , Patrick Hurley of Jamesville, N.Y., Christine and Marc Mero of Rouses Point, Sandra and Rick Perry of Plattsburgh; as well as 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a nephew, Eugene Neumaier of Elizabethtown; and several other nieces and nephews. Her parents; a son, Lawrence Hurley; a sister, Dorothea Schneider; two brothers, Anton and Charles Neumaier; and two infant granddaughters, Jolene and Janene Denton, died earlier. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Church of The Good Shepherd in Elizabethtown. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. "Josie, Mom or Nana Jo", as she was so lovingly known by family and friends, always charmed us with her wit song and laughter. She taught us all that with faith in God and a tender heart, to love your family and neighbor and the rest will fall into place. Hayes Dobbs ThompsonNewark, Delaware — Hayes Dodds Thompson, died Dec. 1, 2002, at age 77. He was a resident of Newark, Del., and Ocala, Fla. He and his wife, Ethel, played music at senior centers and nursing homes, she on the keyboard and Hayes on the saxophone. The seniors loved their music. Hayes also played the saxophone at Praise Assembly Church in Newark, Del., and First Assembly of God Church of Ocala, Fla. Hayes was a Navy veteran and received the Purple Heart award. He is survived by his wife, Ethel; two daughters, Brenda Ruell and Linda Thompson; three stepdaughters, Joanne Bramble, Phyllis Woodmansee and Betty Case; three sisters, Gertrude Joyal of Keeseville, N.Y., Helen Tweedie of Schenectady, N.Y., and Georgianna Anson of Westport, N.Y. There will be no viewing. Interment will be in the Veterans Cemetery, Bear, Del., at the convenience of the family. Monaghan, 97, of Elbow Street, Malone, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone, where he had been a resident since Nov. 21, 2002. He was born in Malone on Dec. 9, 1904, the son of the late Lawrence and Mabel (Steenberge) Monaghan. Calling hours will be in the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time for Mass of Christian burial in St. Joseph's Church, Malone at 12 p.m. The Rev. Msgr. C. John McAvoy, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery on Lake Titus Road, in the spring. |
