Richard C. Burpee

Eustis, Fla. — Richard C. Burpee, 72, of Eustis, Fla., and Elizabethtown died Saturday at his home in Eustis while under the loving care of family, friends and Hospice.

He was born January 30, 1930, in Elizabethtown, the son of Cecil and Marion (Laraby) Burpee.

He served in the Army, retired from New York Telephone Company and has made his home in Eustis for the past 14 years. He was a longtime member of the Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Company, former town justice of Elizabethtown and former member of the Kiwanis Club there. He was also a founding member of the Elizabethtown Ambulance Squad.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jane (Merrow, Hathaway) Burpee. He is survived by five daughters, Nancy Hurteau of Bloomingdale, N.Y., Kim Hathaway of Elizabethtown, Judy Doyle of New Russia, Robin Rumsey of Bronson, Mich., and JoAnn Leggett Thomas of Lewis, and Lee (Bucky) Hathaway of Elizabethtown, 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Following cremation, burial will be in the Lewis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Lake & Sumter, 12300 Lake Park Road, Tavares, Fla., 32778.

Betty Q. Luther

 KEESEVILLE — Betty Q. Luther, 83, of Pleasant Street, Keeseville, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Schenectady on Jan. 13, 1919, the daughter of Joseph W. Harriet (Russ) Quinn.

Betty married Edward W. Luther on Nov. 15, 1941, in Schenectady. They moved to Keeseville in 1947. The Luthers were very actively involved in riding and showing their horses in the 1950s and 1960s. They owned and operated Port Kent Chasm Campsite from 1968 to 1986.

Betty was a long and faithful member of the Keeseville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She worked for more than 30 years as a volunteer, helping to manage the Keeseville Methodist Thrift Shop. She was named United Methodist Woman of the Year in 1991 and was recognized by the church as the Methodist of the Year in 1997.

She was a member of the former Prospect Chapter #659, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past matron and a past district deputy grand matron of Clinton-Essex District, Order of the Eastern Star of the State of New York in 1961. She served on the Board of Directors of the Keeseville Country Garden for nine years and was a longtime member of the North Country Women’s Club in Keeseville.

Survivors include a brother-in-law and his spouse, Harold C. and Margaret Luther of Schenectady; a niece and her family of Schenectady, Barbara L. Quant; and a cousin, Colette M. and her husband, Kenneth Hoey, and family of Scarsdale, N.Y.

Calling hours will be held today, Oct. 7, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Keeseville. A funeral service will be held at the Keeseville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sally White, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in the Vale Cemetery in Schenectady.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Keeseville United Methodist Church.
