Loren R. Craig

Keeseville — Loren R. Craig, 85, of Route 9 South, Keeseville and formerly of AuSable Forks, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Plattsburgh, the son of James and Luella (Wells) Craig.

Loren was retired as pest control officer from the New York State Conservation Dept. at Ray Brook. He was a member of the Tahawus Lodge 790 of F.&A.M. of AuSable Forks, member of Keeseville Elks Lodge 2072, member of the Plattsburgh Moose Club 2390 and a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 504, AuSable Forks.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Marsha Craig of Keeseville, whom he married Jan. 13, 1990; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Milton Lagoy and Shirley and Raymond Aubin, all of AuSable Forks and Lorna and Leonard Parrow of Florida; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sheila Craig of Plattsburgh; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Bryan and Leona Marsha and Kim and Deborah Marsha, all of Keeseville; three stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Roxalana and Theodore Williams of Jay, Crystal and Donald Holdridge and Tracey and Bruce Gordon, all of Keeseville; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; 8 stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Harriet Metcalf of Plattsburgh and Dorothy Baker of Keeseville; three brothers, Donald of Gallaway Lake, Charles of Rexford and Allen of Reno, Nev.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Pelkey and Dorothy Ferguson of Keeseville; a brother-in-law, Joseph Habesch of Rexford; and several nieces and nephews.

His first wife, Sarah Phillips Craig, died June 11, 1988.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home and funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the AuSable Forks United Methodist Church, with Rev. Virginia Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery, AuSable Forks.

Memorials to Loren may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

A reception will follow the committal service for family and friends at the American Legion Post 504.

William H. Carpenter

Port Henry — William H. Carpenter, 79, of Spring Street in Port Henry, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.

He was born at Port Henry, N.Y., on Feb. 2, 1923, the son of Wilford and Florence (Lasher) Carpenter.

He was district manager for Pyrofax Gas Co., Port Henry.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action against the enemy.

He was a member of the Board of Trustees, Village of Port Henry for many years and a long time member of the Port Henry Fire Department.

His wife, Frances (Sweet) Carpenter, died Aug. 8, 2000.

He is survived by his son, John E. Carpenter and his daughter, Judith C. Hundley, both of Vienna, Va.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Carpenter of Westport, N.Y., and Clifford Carpenter of Albany, N.Y.

Calling hours for family and friends will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home, Port Henry, N.Y. Private funeral services will be conducted Friday. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad.

Fred F. Barr

Niceville, Fla. — Fred F. Barr, age 80, formerly of Plattsburgh, passed away Sept. 19, 2002, at his Niceville, Fla., home after a brief bout with cancer.

Mr. Barr, the son of the late Edgar and Frances Barr, was born in Gouverneur, N.Y., on Oct. 28, 1921.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and Bernard Barr.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carmen Eldridge Barr of Niceville; two sons, James Barr and wife Diane of Plattsburgh N.Y., and Michael Barr and wife Barbara of Baldwinsville N.Y.; and a daughter, Connie Naftel and husband Don of Niceville. His family includes five grandchildren, Scott and Kelly Barr, Brittany Bair, Julie Forderkonz and Chrissy Dixon, as well as three great-grandchildren, Carter, Cooper and Allison.

A graduate of Gouverneur High School, Mr. Barr enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1943. Captain Barr served in the South Pacific as a B24 pilot and squadron commander. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to civilian life and was employed as personnel manager of Vanity Fair and later Georgia Pacific. He retired from Spevack's of Syracuse in 1979 and enjoyed his later years in Florida and Gouverneur.

At Mr. Barr's request, he will be cremated and a private ceremony will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Covenant Hospice, 101 Hart St., Niceville, FL 32578.

Grace Taylor McGaughey

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. — Grace Taylor McGaughey, R.N., of Embury Apartments, Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Wesley Care Center, one week after suffering a stroke.

Mrs. McGaughey, daughter of Henry and Gertrude (Hammond) Taylor, was born Feb. 21, 1916, in Sherburne, Vt., where she grew up on a farm.

She attended nurses training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where she met her husband, Rev. Melvin Ray McGaughey.

After Mr. McGaughey's graduation from Boston University School of Theology, the couple joined the Troy Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. They served churches in Ellenburg, Hoosick Falls, Peru and Schenectady in New York and Morrisville and Bennington in Vermont. After retirement, they served as missionaries in the Island Kingdom of Tonga.

As a nurse, Mrs. McGaughey worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Copley Memorial Hospital in Morrisville and Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington, as well as private duty. She loved cooking for family and friends, sewing and needlework. In recent years, she made hundreds of articles of clothing for migrant workers' children and the Troy Conference Task Force on Children and Poverty.

She has given herself as an anatomical gift to Albany Medical College.

Grace is survived by her husband; her five children, Lawrence, Stanley, Douglas and Stephen McGaughey and Janet James; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 12th at the United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Ave., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Treva M. Tharp

WILLSBORO — Treva M. Tharp, 80, of Bay Circle, Willsboro, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident.

She was born in Mooers on May 20, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Eva (Blow) Perrotte.

Treva was a rural mail carrier in Willsboro for many years.

She was a communicant of St. Philip of Jesus Christ Church in Willsboro. She belonged to the Ladies of the Elks in Keeseville.

Survivors include one daughter and her finance, Lynda Hoeltzel and Walter E. Morgan of Willsboro; and three grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Laurie Hoeltzel of Dallas, Texas, Michael Hoeltzel of Miami, Fla., and SP 4 Matthew Romano of Fort Campbell, Ky.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Charles Tharp on May 8, 1993; and her daughter, Gayle T. Demarais, on Feb. 22, 1997.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru, with the Rev. James Delbel, pastor of St. Philip of Jesus Christ Church in Willsboro, officiating.

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Mooers.

Richard Blain Graves

PEASLEEVILLE — Richard Blaine Graves, 55, of Stackville Road, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Plattsburgh on Jan. 11, 1947, the son of Dr. Robert H. and Carol L. (Gilday) Graves.

Mr. Graves graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1965. He received associate degrees from Dean Junior College in Massachusetts and Paul Smiths College. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After returning, he worked for Imperial Paper Mill for 20 years.

Richard has been a corrections officer for the past nine years, presently at the Eastern Correctional Facility in Napanoch, N.Y.

Survivors include his father, Robert, of Point Au Roche; one brother, Robert H. Graves Jr. of Plattsburgh; and one sister and brother-in-law, Leigh and Philip Cerone of Plattsburgh.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Peru Rescue Squad, Peru, N.Y.

The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Frederick Greeley, 89, of the Moses-Ludington Nursing Home in Ticonderoga and formerly of Stafford Street, Loudonville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at the Nursing Home.

He was born Aug. 21, 1913, in Schenectady, N.Y.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bowen Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham, N.Y. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church of Loudonville. Burial will be in the Memory's Garden Cemetery of Colonie.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home.

Katherine L. McCaffrey Brown, 62, of Pratt Street in Rouses Point, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at her home.

There will be no public calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Arrangements are with the Clark Funeral Home in Rouses Point.

Louise B. Rock, 99, of Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, died Sept. 23, 2002.

She was born in Plattsburgh on June 24, 1903, daughter of Thomas and Emma (Couchaine) Burdo.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements with Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Milford W. "Gritzy" Gruetzmacher, 88, of Bushey Street in Morrisonville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center with his family at his side.

He was born in Great Bend, N.D., on Sept. 7, 1914, the son of William Adolphe Gruetzmacher and Rhoda Sophia Louise (Stoltnow) Gruetzmacher.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Friday at a time to be announced at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in St. Alexander's Cemetery, Morrisonville.
