Published 09/06/02Madeleine (Dion) RyanVero Beach, Fla. — Madeleine (Dion) Ryan, 69, of Vero Beach, Fla., died on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at the Cleveland Clinic in Fort Lauderdale. She was born on May 3, 1933, to Gladys (Brothers) and Phillippe Dion of Rouses Point. She was married on April 19, 1952, to former Press-Republican Bureau Chief Alan Ryan at St. Patrick's Church in Rouses Point. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and Paul Bethka of Chazy, Kathy and Mike Consavage of Coral Springs, Fla., and Allison and Rodney Grass of Vero Beach, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Skip and Pam Ryan and Layne and Holly Ryan, all of Vero Beach; one sister and brother-in-law, Therese and Walter Connelly of Plattsburgh; and one sister-in-law, Patricia Dion of Rouses Point. She had 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Sondra Ryan, who died in 1967 and her brother, George Dion, who died in December 2000. Mrs. Ryan was an assistant merchandiser for J.C. Penney for 24 years. She was a long-time member of St. Patrick's parish in Rouses Point and St. Helen's parish in Vero Beach. A funeral service was held in Vero Beach on Sept. 6th. A memorial service will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Rouses Point on Sept. 14th at 11 a.m. A private burial service will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery. Caporale, 86, of Flynn Avenue, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002. She was born in Georgia, Vt., on April 6,1916, the daughter of Raymond and Eunice (Tucker) Curtis. Mrs. Caporale retired from Peru Central School as a librarian. Survivors include her husband Peter, of Firemen's Home in Hudson; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Peter Caporale of Wappingers Falls, Vincent and Rita of Hawthorne and Raymond and Elise of Essex Junction, Vt.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Hilda Curtis of Peru; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Donald Michela of Chicago and Betty and Ernest Bins of Carson City, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Friday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the funeral home, with the Rev. Ives, 61, of Notch Hill Lane, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Ticonderoga on Aug. 3, 1941, the son of the late Vernon and Mary (Ryan) Ives. Mr. Ives was a life long area resident. He was employed by the International Paper Company of Ticonderoga for 42 years and was currently the second most senior employee at the mill. He also owned and operated the Darling Hill Market (Ives Seafood) of Putnam Station until 1972. Mr. Ives served as town justice of Putnam Station for 12 years and also served on the Putnam Town Board. He was a member of the Putnam Volunteer Fire Department, International Paper Company's Quarter Century Club and the St. Isaac Jogues Council 333 Knights of Columbus of Ticonderoga. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was the founder of the Northern Washington County Fish & Game Club. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Peggy J. (Granger) Ives; one son, Howard V. Ives of Vero Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Dannae J. Bock and her husband Michael of South Glens Falls; one sister, Mary Lou Drinkwine of West Mobile, Ala.; two granddaughters, Jillian C. Bock and Richele E. Bock, both of South Glens Falls; and one nephew, Brett Drinkwine of Gulf Shores, Ala. Karen Koehler DonnallyFlourtown, Pa. — Karen Koehler Donnally, 54, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Easton, Pa., on Dec. 26, 1947, the daughter of Doris (Donnally) Koehler of Nazareth, Pa., and the late Kenneth E. Koehler. Karen was a graduate of Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pa., and received her master’s degree in social services from Brym Mawr College, Philadelphia, Pa. She was the supportive services coordinator for the Women’s Revitalization Project in Philadelphia and previously worked for Project Rainbow of Lutheran Services. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Jake Donnally Goldstein of Flourtown, Pa.; a brother, Scott Koehler of Nazareth, Pa.; a sister, Maureen Meath; two nephews, Ryan and Dan Meath; and a niece, Lauren Meath, all of Plattsburgh. A memorial service and reception was held on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Nazareth, Pa. Leland "Pop" SmithMooers — Leland "Pop" Smith, 96, of Mooers, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born on June 21, 1906, in Mooers, the son of Thomas and Rachel Mary (Cleland) Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life time member of the Ralph Davison American Legion of Mooers. He owned and operated several businesses in the Mooers area for many years and was a life long farmer and gardener. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Pearl Drown, whom he married June 24,1938; a son, Tom Smith of Mooers; four granddaughters, Earleen Finley, Lizabeth Male, Angela Lee Smith and Alicia Smith; and six great-grandchildren. A son, Gerald Smith and three brothers, Willis, Harland and Ernest Smith, all died before him. There will be no calling hours. A committal service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Ellenburg Depot, with the Rev. Al Johnson officiating. Rita Linney HartPlattsburgh — Mrs. Rita Linney Hart, 88, formerly of Wolfe Way, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was born in Champlain, N.Y., on May 30, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Georgiana (Senecal) LaFountain. Rita had been a school teacher with the Chateaugay School District. She had made her home in Lyon Mountain and Port Henry before moving to Plattsburgh. While living in Lyon Mt., she was a charter member and Past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Our Lady of the Snows Chapter 1548, the Sorrell-Woodward American Legion Post 1623 and she was a member of St. Bernard's Church. When she made her home in Port Henry, Rita was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Altar Rosary Society of St. Patrick's. While living in Plattsburgh, she was a member of St. Peter's Church and the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Peter's Church. Rita was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Past Grand Regents of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Diocese of Ogdensburg. Rita was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Georgiana LaFountain; her first husband, William J. Linney; her second husband, Bernard G. Hart; a son, Robert J. Linney; a grandson, Stephen A. LaBarge; a brother, Arnold LaFountain; and a daughter-in-law, Jeri J. Linney. She is survived by four sons, J. Angus Linney of Moriarty, N.M., Gerald C. Linney and his wife Karen of Champlain, N.Y., William J. Linney and his wife Cindy of Colliersville, Tenn., and John R. Linney of Plattsburgh; a daughter, Jacqueline L. and her husband Andrus J. LaBarge of Lake Katrine, N.Y.; two sisters, Kleo Scott and her husband Jack of Duluth, Minn., and Janet Carey and her husband William of Champlain, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Luff, 74, of 0llivetti Place, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Plymouth, Pa., on Jan. 15, 1928, the son of Raymond and Priscilla (Gower) Luff. Robert retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1971 after 20 years of service. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. After he retired from the Air Force, he worked for Plattsburgh Housing Authority, retiring in December 1991. Robert was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Clinton Lodge 155, where he served as Past Master, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125, the American Legion Post 20, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Plattsburgh Lodge 621, the NORCO Shrine Club and the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church. Robert served on the Board of the Senior Citizens Council and was a member of the Board of Directors of the First Plattsburgh Federal Credit Union. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Norma A. (Elinsky) Luff of Plattsburgh; his children, Debra J. Luff of Sacramento, Calif., Janet A. Elliott and her husband Tracy of Plattsburgh, David J. Luff of Plattsburgh and Lt. Col. Sandra E. Luff of Alexandria, Va.; three grandsons, Daniel R. Elliott, Ryan D. Luff and Brian J. Elliott, all of Plattsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. LaValley, 75, of County Rt. 24, Bellmont, died Sept. 5, 2002, at Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
