Russell H. Barnard

Plattsburgh — Russell H. Barnard, 94, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Plattsburgh on March 24, 1908, son of Roma and Anna (Manor) Barnard.

Because of his father’s illness he left school at the age of 15 to help support the family. He worked at various jobs until he became a deliverer of fuel products for the Gulf Oil Company. During his tenure there the Teamsters Local 648 was organized and he became the business agent and secretary / treasurer for over 20 years. Upon his retirement from there he took over the ownership and management of B and C Garage on U.S. Avenue, now Agway Petroleum.

During the years as business agent of Local 648 he was also president of the Plattsburgh Trades and Labor Assembly. Under his leadership the organization supported many causes to improve opportunities for working and retired families. Some of these efforts were elevated to the creation of BOCES, Clinton Community College, affordable housing for low income, senior citizen housing and the establishment of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base. When the base was developed he enlisted members of the Trades and Labor Assembly and area contractors to give of their time and monies to establish a USO over the Grand Union on the corner of Margaret and Cornelia Streets. He served on many city commissions, Parks and Beach, Crete Center, Plattsburgh Housing Authority, Plattsburgh State Economic Committee and vice-chairman of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Liaison Commission. His longest service was as a member of the Plattsburgh Housing Authority. He served 29 years, 25 as chairman. During that time many low income projects were built. The authority’s proudest accomplishment was the Stearns Apartments for senior citizens, the first senior citizen project in New York State outside of New York City. Governor Rockefeller attended the opening and in October of 1964 Russell was sent to New York City to receive a citation to Plattsburgh Housing Authority for "Outstanding achievement in advanced housing for the aged." Stearns was followed by the Robert Long Apartments, Lake View Towers and the Russell H. Barnard Apartments named for him.

Russell was a life member of the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge 621, the Plattsburgh Knights of Columbus 255 and a spousal member of the Northeastern Zone of the New York Retired Teachers Association.

Russell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis C. (Crinklaw) Barnard of Plattsburgh; a son, Leon (Peter) Barnard and his wife, Donna of Liverpool; a grandson, Brent of Liverpool and a granddaughter, Heather Barnard Riley and her husband, Dan of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Catherine Barnard Marquis and her husband, Dr. Dave of Palmetto, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Cdr. Douglas Crinklaw (U.S.N. retired) and his wife, Emily of Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters-in- law, Ann Barnard of Morrisonville and Ruth Barnard of Tom Miller Road; and many nieces and nephews.

Russell was predeceased by three sisters, Aurelia Barnard, Grace Yopp and Lucille Gerry Haas; and three brothers, Joseph Lynn, Roma and William Barnard.

Calling hours will be Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. Members of the Knights of Columbus will meet Friday evening at 7 p.m. for services and members of the Plattsburgh Lodge of Elks will meet Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. for services. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at noon from St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Cumberland Head. Burial will follow in Whispering Maples Mausoleum on the Tom Miller Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Skilled Nursing Facility at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh or to the charity of one’s choice.

Bernadina M. "Bernie" Collins

Plattsburgh — Mrs. Bernadina M. "Bernie" Collins, 79, of Leonard Avenue, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the CVPH Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was born in Plattsburgh on Sept. 10, 1922, the daughter of Stephen and Venita (Snow) Pavone.

Bernie was a member of Bluff Point Golf and Country Club, the Plattsburgh Women’s Bowling Association, bowling in the Peru Bowling League at Plattsburgh Lanes. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of St. John's Church.

She is survived by her husband, whom she married April 25, 1943, Raymond E. Collins of Plattsburgh; two sons, Stephen Collins Sr. and his wife, Marcia of Queensbury, N.Y., and Rick Collins of Morrisonville; a brother, Gene Pavone and his wife, Bertha of Plattsburgh; five grandchildren, Cory Collins of Plattsburgh, Stephen Collins Jr. of Queensbury, N.Y., Kent McKeighan of Granville, N.Y., Connie Sunday of Phoenix, Ariz., Marcie Rath of Rensselaerville, N.Y.; nine great - grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Bernie was predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Venita Pavone; and a sister, Pat Ransom.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. from St. John’s Church. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to the Skilled Nursing Unit at CVPH Medical Center.

Mary Lafountain

SCOTIA/AUSABLE FORKS — Mary Lafountain, 84, of Scotia and formerly of AuSable Forks, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at the Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.

Mamie was born March 31, 1918, in AuSable Forks, the daughter of William and Florence (Nelson) Hart.

She was employed at the J. & J. Rogers Co. in AuSable Forks for several years. She was also a chambermaid at Winklemans Motel. When the J. & J. Rogers Co. closed she and her husband, Paul moved to Schenectady, where they were employed at Coyne Laundry in Schenectady, where she worked until she retired. At the time of her death she was making her home with her daughter, Mary Morrissey of Scotia.

Mamie was married to Napoleon F. LaFountain who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1974. Of that marriage six children were born who survive, two daughters, Shirley Furnia of AuSable Forks and Mary Morrissey of Scotia; four sons, William of Stillwater, James of Ballston Spa, Robert of Schenectady and Thomas of Mechanicville; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mamie also enjoyed embroidering and baking. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer - Sprague Funeral Home, AuSable Forks. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Church in AuSable Forks and burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Memorials to her may be made to the Cancer Fund.

Daniel A. Kelley

Beekmantown — Daniel A. Kelley, 53, of the Butler Road, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at CVPH Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Nov. 27, 1948, the son of the late John Kuhn and Dorothy Beaman.

Dan is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Kelley; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Becky and Bill LaRock of Plattsburgh and Robin and Josh Sanders of Watertown; one stepson and his partner, Adam Nash and Jen Boulrice of Chazy; five grandchildren, Gabe, Allison, Dexter, Zander and Owen; two sisters and their husbands, Cheryl and Clyde Shaver and Robin and Patrick Perrin; three brothers and one sister-in-law, John and Gail Kelley, David Kuhn and Paul Kelley.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Joanne Wolf and Judith Thomas.

Dan was a Vietnam veteran who served two tours in Vietnam, where he was a tank combat commander. Dan was wounded while in combat, recovered from his injuries and returned to combat. He received the Purple Heart along with other medals and a Combat Action Ribbon.

Upon leaving the service as a corporal he was self employed as a master mechanic.

Dan loved hunting and fishing, he was an avid sportsman, but most of all he loved people - he will be dearly missed. Our Dan will always be with us.

Dan wanted a special thank you sent out to the nurses and staff at CVPH. They were all very kind and caring during his long stay. Dan also wanted to say thanks to the staff in dietary.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Vietnam Veterans memorial or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the R. W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Joseph D. Castine

ROUSES POINT — Joseph D. Castine, 67, of Rouses Point, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born May 19, 1935.

He worked as a mechanic at Bechards Farm Equipment in Champlain for many years. He was also a former member of the Champlain Fire Department.

Joseph is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Heather Castine of Champlain; one daughter and son-in-law, Joseph and Lisa Durkin of Ellenburg Depot.; two grand-children, Taylor Durkin and Gage Castine. He also is survived by special friends, Rene and Bernadette Bechard and Jackie Taylor.

There will be no public calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date and announced by the Clark Funeral Home in Champlain.

Marjorie W. Carpenter

Malone — Mrs. Marjorie W. Carpenter, 94, of Malone died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home, where she had resided since 1998.

She had formerly resided at 16 First Street in Malone.

Marjorie was born on June 8, 1908, in Burke, N.Y., the daughter of Fred and Isabelle (Selkirk) Wright.

Marjorie attended Hawks Hollow School in Burke, as a child. She graduated from Franklin Academy, St. Lawrence University and Potsdam Normal where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught for a number of years at the Earlville School in Chateaugay, N.Y.

In January of 1938, she married Ezra S. Carpenter in the Centenary United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Campbell officiating. She joined in the family in operating the Carpenter’s Store in Owls Head, N.Y. After Ezra’s Death, Marjorie taught at the Park Street School and later at the Lamberton School in Malone. She retired from teaching in 1968.

In retirement she enjoyed knitting and watching baseball and hockey.

Marjorie attended the Centenary United Methodist Church of Malone. She was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and a 50 year member of the Elm City - Glenwood - Chalybeate Chapter of the Order of The Eastern Star, as well as the Retired New York State Teachers Association.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Karen Carpenter of Malone; step-daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Eldred Aubrey of Malone; grandson, Douglas and his wife, Severine Carpenter of Milton, Mass.; granddaughter, Amy Carpenter and her husband, Will Sullivan of Brighton, Mass.; stepgrand-daughters, Mrs. Gail (Aubrey) Wallenderi of King City, Ontario, and Nancy (Aubrey) and her husband, Andrew Leviton of Bethaney, Conn. Marjorie is also survived by nine great-grand-children.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; as well as a brother, Charles Wright.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 21, 2002, at the Morningside Cemetery in Malone, with Rev. Thomas Davis officiating,

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alice Hyde Nursing Home Residents’ Activity Fund.

Arrangements are by the Spaulding Funeral Home of Malone.
