Published 08/25/02Mary Ann "Nancy" CuddyLAKE PLACID — Mary Ann "Nancy" Cuddy of 2 West Heights, Lake Placid, died on Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at the Uihlein Mercy Center, Lake Placid, N.Y. Nancy was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Oct. 12, 1926, the daughter of John and Marjorie (Underdown) Cuddy. She was a graduate of Eastman School of Dental Hygiene and Syracuse University. She served on the dental staff of the Veterans Hospital in Syracuse. Her first teaching assignment was at Lake Placid Central School in the late 40’s and early 50’s. She completed her teaching career at the West Genesee School System in Syracuse. Nancy was a member of the New York State Teachers Association, the New York State United Teachers Association and AARP. During her teaching career, she was very active in student activities and served in many capacities in her local teachers associations. Miss Cuddy was a member of the Saint Agnes Church Court Tom Dooley Catholic Daughters of America. In addition to her parents, other members of her family who have predeceased her are her sister, Eleanor Gorman; and a nephew, David Gorman. She is survived by a nephew, James Gorman and his wife. Christine; several cousins; and a very close friend, Cornelia "Connie" Bonsignore. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church on Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the North Elba Cemetery, Lake Placid. Immediately following the graveside services a reception will be held at Howard Johnson’s Restaurant for family and friends. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements. Charles R. BarnesPLATTSBURGH — Charles R. Barnes, 76, of Beekman Street, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Plattsburgh on April 22, 1926, the son of Raymond and Ann (Robare) Barnes. Charles married the former Annette B. Murray in 1949 at St. John’s Church. She predeceased him in November 1989. Mr. Barnes graduated from MAI in Plattsburgh and attended Champlain College. He later served in the U. S. Army Air Corps from July of 1944 to September of 1946. He worked for Parkhurst and Taylor Insurance Company for several years and became vice-president of the company. In 1966, Mr. Barnes purchased the business. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Christopher Chapman of Bethlehem, Pa., Joan and Michael Howley of Plattsburgh and Janice and Timothy Foley of Port Orange, Fla.; one son, Roger Barnes of Charlotte, Vt.; 11 grandchildren, Christopher Chapman, Jeremy Chapman, Ian Chapman, Elizabeth Howley, Brian Howley, Evan Howley, Adam Douglas, Breanne Douglas, Amanda Foley, Nathan Foley and Matthew Barnes; and two great-grandsons. Along with his wife, Annette, Mr. Barnes was predeceased by a son, Charles "Jeff" Barnes in 1993; and a brother, Albert Barnes. There will be no public calling hours. Thompson Sr.Crown Point — Leo R. Thompson Sr., 56, of Breed Hill Road, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center of Burlington, Vt. He was born Jan. 13, 1946, in Putnam Station, N.Y., the son of the late Karl Phillip Thompson and Jean (Supry) Thompson, who survives him, of Putnam Station. Mr. Thompson was a life-long area resident. He was employed by the International Paper Company of Ticonderoga for over 30 years until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the Company's Quarter Century Club. Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having serving during the Vietnam War as a sonar technician aboard the U.S.S. Keppler. He was a member of the American Legion Post 224 of Ticonderoga. He was predeceased by his wife, Christine J. (Hurlburt) Thompson on March 9, 1999. In addition to his mother, survivors include one son, Leo R. Thompson Jr. and his wife Helen of Crown Point; one daughter, Crystala R. Printy and her husband Clifton of Kansas City, Mo.; seven brothers, Melvin O'Dell of Dwight, Kan., Keith Breault of Newport, Vt., Paul Breault of Dresden, Harold Breault Jr. of Glens Falls, Danny Breault of Ticonderoga, Karl P. Thompson Jr. of Ticonderoga and Patrick Graves of Plattsburgh; nine sisters, Jeanne Breault of Glens Falls, Debbie Fish of Honolulu, Hawaii, Daryel Sharpe of Ticonderoga, Cheryl Ann Hutchins of Scottsdale, Ariz., Denise Adams of Medesto, Calif., Robin Armstrong of Crestview, Fla., Wendy Carrol of Crown Point, Susan Trammell of Putnam Station and Patricia Knapp of Glens Falls. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Skyler Thompson, Haley Thompson, Madison Thompson and Kaleb Gould; and many nieces and nephews. Colver, 75, of Prospect Avenue, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born in Richford, Vt., on July 22, 1927, the son of Burdette and Roah (Casavant) Colver. John was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He served as Clinton County Airport Manager and was City Chamberlain for the City of Plattsburgh from 1950 to 1983, when he retired. John served as chairman of the board at CVPH Medical Center, chairman of the County of Clinton Industrial Development Association for 21 years and was a past chairman of the Clinton County United Way. A long time member of the Plattsburgh Rotary Club, he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. John was a Life Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Plattsburgh Lodge 621, the American Legion Post 20 and he was a member of St. John's Church. He is survived by his wife Helen (Jabot) Colver of Plattsburgh; three sons, Paul Colver of Sylven Lake, Alberta, Canada, David Colver and his wife Deborah of West Plattsburgh and Matthew Colver of Jersey City, N.J.; three daughters, Jennifer Colver and her husband Michael Kulik of Plattsburgh, Mary Boyd and her husband William of Vernon, N.Y., and Maureen Smith and her husband Michael of Chester, N.H.; a sister, Ann Raffetto of Palos Verdes, Calif.; his stepchildren, Steven Giguere of Plattsburgh, Margaret Ayotte and her husband Allen of Altona and Leslie Giguere and her companion Dr. Beth Wiedel of Madison, Wis.; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Ryan, 42, an attorney for the U.S. Senate for the past 12 years and a resident of Arlington, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington, Va. She was born on Dec. 5, 1959, the daughter of the late Robert M. Ryan and the late Noreen (Murphy) Ryan of Saranac, N.Y. Elizabeth graduated from St. John’s High School in 1977 in Plattsburgh and earned a bachelor of science degree from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1981. She received a Juris Doctorate from Washington and Lee University Law School in Lexington, Va., in 1984 and was a member of the New Hampshire bar. Elizabeth practiced law at Devine, Millimet & Branch in Manchester, N.H., for many years, prior to moving to the Washington, D.C. area. Elizabeth began her Senate career as counsel for Senator Warren Rudman of New Hampshire, but for the last decade served as counsel for the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. She was responsible for the committee’s educational programs, where she became widely known and highly regarded throughout the Senate. She was also the principal author of the last two editions of the Senate Ethics Manual. Survivors include two sisters, Regina M. Ryan of Columbia, Md., and Dr. Paula D. Ryan of Boston, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Jonathan Hager of Columbia; and a niece, Audrey Hager of Columbia. Elizabeth also had many loving relatives and friends who will greatly mourn her loss. Stevens, 62, of the Burns Road, Fort Covington, N.Y., died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at the home of David and Kathy Holden while under their loving care and also Hospice of the North Country, Inc. He was born in Fort Covington on July 8, 1940, the son of the late William and Emily (Quinet) Stevens. Calling hours will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home in Fort Covington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Fort Covington with the Rev. Kris Lauzon officiating. Burial will be in the new St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Covington. Edna M. White, 61, of State Highway 115, North Lawrence, N.Y., died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at her home, under the care of her family. She was born in North Lawrence on Feb. 6, 1941, the daughter of the late Irving and Dorothy (Snyder) Brean.
