Reverend Karl Edward Cron

PLATTSBURGH — The Reverend Karl Edward Cron, faithful and beloved pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Plattsburgh from 1965 through 1998, died at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 2, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Alfred Christian Cron and Florence Diehl Cron.

His childhood was spent in Floral Park, Long Island, N.Y., where he attended John Lewis Childs Elementary School and Sewanhaka High School. He later received degrees from Concordia College, Bronxville, N.Y., in 1958 (AA); Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1960 (BA); and Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, Mo., in 1964 (Master of Divinity); and in 1970 (Master of Sacred Theology). He did graduate work at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Reverend Cron was united in marriage to Diana M. Baisch on June 28, 1964. He was ordained on June 26, 1965, in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, after which he and Diana moved to Plattsburgh so that he could assume the position of pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, where he served faithfully for 33 years.

As soon as he arrived in the North Country, Pastor Cron began serving the community in many ways. He was supervisor of the Adirondack Campsite Ministry from 1965 to 1974, Chaplain of Adirondack area hospitals from 1965 to 1970, Military Contact Pastor for the Plattsburgh Air Force Base from 1965 until its closing in 1995, College Contact Pastor for area colleges and Contact Pastor for Clinton Correctional Facility beginning in 1965.

In 1973, Pastor Cron founded the Protestant Campus Ministry to the Plattsburgh colleges, which developed into a full-time ecumenical campus ministry supported by 17 local congregations and denominational judicatories. He served as Chairman of the Inter-Lutheran Olympics Planning Committee, which established a Christian presence at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.

He developed a Lutheran mission station in Saranac Lake, N.Y., in the 1970s, which later became the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. Pastor Cron served 10 years as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Upstate New York Region, East Coast Synod, of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (1977 to 1987). He joined the AELC after leaving the Missouri Synod in 1976.

Contributions to the community included presidency of the Clinton County Association of Churches and Synagogues, a predecessor of the Interfaith Council (1970) and chairmanship of the Clinton County Narcotics Guidance Council (1971 to 1972) and of the Plattsburgh Community Crisis Center when it was founded (1971 to 1973). He also served as a board member of the Champlain Valley Oratorio Society and the Plattsburgh City Planning Board.

Other sources of joy in his life were music, house restoration, gardening and travel.

After his resignation due to illness as pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in 1999, Karl and Diana became active at Trinity Episcopal Church, Plattsburgh, when Diana accepted the position of organist in October 2000. Karl was able to continue his ministry by occasionally preaching and teaching as Trinity’s Associate Minister of the Word.

In his early years in the North Country, Pastor Cron loved hiking in the nearby Adirondack Mountains and came within two mountains of becoming a 46’er, one who has climbed all of the Adirondack High Peaks. In later years he climbed the more daunting peaks of sickness that damaged his nerves and muscles. He will be remembered by many for his patient suffering through bouts of serious illness, always taking God at His word, confident that He intends good for us even in times of struggle. Pastor Cron’s preaching and teaching, as well as his life, always affirmed this Good News.

In 1999, The Reverend Karl Cron Lecture Series was established at Plattsburgh State University by the Protestant Campus Ministry Board of Sponsors to recognize his contribution as "founding father" of PCM. This annual speakers series focuses on religious studies topics as they relate to campus and academic life at a public university.

Other actions for which he will be remembered are his loving mentoring of young clergymen and his careful attention to the details of reverent liturgical worship.

The inscription on each of Pastor Cron’s hundreds of sermons is Soli Deo Gloria (To God alone be the Glory). Those words would be a good inscription for his life as well. In all he did, he pointed not to himself but to Christ.

Karl is survived by his wife, Diana, of Plattsburgh; his son, Jonathan, of Portsmouth, N.H.; his mother, Florence Diehl Cron, of Bethlehem, Pa.; a brother, Alfred Carl Cron, of McLean, Va.; nephews, Alan Baisch and his wife, Sharon, Mark Cron, Matthew Cron, and Brian Cron; and niece Leslie Cron; grandniece, Alyssa Baisch; grandnephews, Christopher Baisch, Eric Baisch and Jordan Rosenbaum. He was predeceased by his father, Alfred Christian Cron.

There will be no calling hours; friends are invited to visit Diana at home any evening.

All are welcomed to celebrate a life lived for God in a joyful Lutheran High Mass planned by Karl several days before his death. This service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Plattsburgh, on Aug. 31, 2002, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. John T. Sorenson, Rector of Trinity Church, serving as host. Celebrant will be the Reverend Richard Mueller of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kingston, N.Y. Joseph Daly, Theologian at Trinity, will be the preacher.

Area clergy are invited to vest and process.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Lutheran World Relief or the Organ Restoration Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, Plattsburgh.
