Published 08/16/02Roy C. RodenhiserWilllsboro — Roy C. Rodenhiser, 86, died peacefully at his home on Aug. 15, 2002. He was born in Liscomb, Nova Scotia, Canada, on April 12, 1916, the son of John William Leonard and Grace (Crooks) Rodenhiser. Mr. Rodenhiser began his mining career as a gold miner in Canada. He participated in rescue work at the Moose River cave-in in 1936 and then served in the Canadian Army from 1940-1945. He then emigrated to the United States and in 1952 he began his mining career in Willsboro working for Godfrey L. Cabot Co. as the superintendent of the newly developing wollastonite mine in Willsboro. In 1955 he became the assistant operations manager and in 1958 he went to Mexico to explore a new deposit and develop a production facility. In 1960 he returned to Willsboro and converted the open pit mine to an underground mine. In 1965 he was promoted to plant manager. In 1969, when Cabot sold the Willsboro business to Interpace Corporation, Roy assumed the exploration duties of seeking other deposits. He directed a core drilling examination of deposits in California, Canada and New York State. In the mid-1970’s, he directed the expansion of the Willsboro mine and also the exploration of a large new deposit near Lewis, N.Y., and it was under his direction that the mining operation was gradually moved from Willsboro to a large, modem and environmentally acceptable open pit mine at the Lewis site. He retired in 1980 shortly after Interpace sold the business to Canadian Pacific Enterprises. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Eva Jane (Dawes); a brother, Jess and a sister, Barbara Winkleman. He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Lawrence of Willsboro with whom he lived; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy W. and Barbara Rodenhiser of Rochester; three grandchildren, Sue Lynda McClure of Sugarbush, Beth (Mrs. Jeffrey) Hayes of Roanoke, Texas, and Isak Rodenhiser of Rochester; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Evan Hayes of Roanoke, Texas. He is also survived by two sisters, Velma of Stellarton, Nova Scotia and Jessie of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours, but friends are invited to stop at the home. Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Gerald Sutch, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Congregational UCC in Willsboro, where he had been a member for 50 years. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery at the convenience of the family. SantorWest Chazy — Mr. Herbert W. Santor, 72, of Lovers Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home. He was born in Beekmantown on March 12, 1930, the son of Herbert and Agnes (Eckmon) Santor. Herbert was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in Korea. He had been a cook at Angelo’s Restaurant in Plattsburgh. He was a lifetime member of the Great Chazy River Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 1418, a member of the Russell B. Childs American Legion Post 769, Chazy, a life member of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association and the Disabled American Veterans. Herbert of survived by his wife, whom he married Nov. 5, 1953, Carolyn T. (Brothers) Santor of West Chazy; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Gerrie Santor of Milford, Pa., Keith and Janine Santor of West Chazy; a daughter and son-in-law, Candy and Raymond Farr of West Chazy; four grandchildren, Amy and Jeff Stoller of Greensboro, N.C., Jason Santor of Greensboro, N.C., Nicole Farr of West Chazy and Ashley Santor of West Chazy. Herbert was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Mary Lou Santor, Marilyn Short. There will be no calling hours. Following cremation a Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday August 24, 2002 at 11:00 a. in. from St. Joseph's Church in West Chazy. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Glenn Scott DawsonSaranac — Glenn Scott Dawson, 40, died Monday, August 12, 2002 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Schenectady on March 23, 1962, the son of Sidney J. and Carol (Beard) Dawson. Glenn, who resided in Saranac with his daughter Sarah, owned and operated Dawson Estates in Saranac. Glenn was a graduate of Clinton Community College majoring in criminal justice, where he earned awards being on the President's List. Glenn, a former resident of Schenectady, moved to Saranac as he put it "to be in God's Country - a place of tranquil peace and beauty". Glenn's daughter Sarah plans on operating Dawson Estates as she puts it "to be near her Dad and God". Signed, a proud and heartbroken Dad, love you forever, "J.D." Douglas George FrenyaSHALLOTTE, N.C. — Douglas George Frenya, 83, Fairway Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in Autumn Care of Shallotte, N.C. Mr. Frenya was born on Dec. 2, 1918, in Rouses Point, N.Y., he was a son of the late Gene and Teresa Young Frenya. He was a U.S. Amy veteran. Mr. Frenya is survived by his wife, Genevieve Beaubriand Frenya; two sons, Ronald Averill and wife, Virginia, Shallotte, N.C., and Wayne Averill and wife, Barbara, Newburgh, N.Y.; one daughter, Janice Monty and husband, John, Schenectady, N.Y.; four sisters, Irene Major, Rouses Point, N.Y., Barbara Seymour, Plattsburgh, N.Y., Myrtle Premore, Silver Springs, Fla., and Genevieve Cyr, Boston, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great - grandchildren. Mary Jeanne BarkerTucson, Ariz. — Mary Jeanne Barker, 79, of Tucson, Ariz., passed away March 1, 2002. Mary Jeanne Barker is survived by her two sons, Edwin Barker of Wayland, Mass., and Stephen Barker of Portland, Maine; her two granddaughters, Rachel and Ilana Barker of Wayland, Mass.; her sister, Elma Ruth Koch of San Diego, Calif.; and her brother, Charles Austin of Florida. Mrs. Barker was born Mary Jeanne Austin in Indiana and raised in Greely, Colo. She was the second of three children born to LeRoy and Goldie E. (Keener) Austin. In 1949, she married Francis H. Barker of Crown Point, N.Y. Mrs. Barker lived in Plattsburgh, N.Y. from 1958 to 1978. From 1963 until 1968 she owned and operated the Jeanne Barker Beauty Salon in West Plattsburgh, N.Y., and subsequently worked for the Beekmantown Central School District. She moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1978 before retiring to Tucson, Ariz., with her husband in 1988. A memorial service will be held on Aug. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 127 Beekman Street, Plattsburgh, NY. Blanche M. McCormickPlattsburgh — Mrs. Blanche M. McCormick, 88, formerly of Couch Street, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Meadowbrook Health Care Facility. She was born in Ogdensburg, N.Y., on March 30, 1914, the daughter of William and Lucy (Smith) Marney. She was a member of St. John’s Church and the Altar Rosary Society of St. John’s. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles J. McCormick; two brothers, Carl and William Marney. Blanche is survived by three children, Charles J. and his wife, Susan McCormick of West Chester, Pa., Patrick and Nancy McCormick of Plattsburgh and Elizabeth and her husband, Hank Owen of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Mary Martin of Ogdensburg; and a brother, Louis Marney; five grandchildren C.J. , Michael, Timothy, Jennifer and Stephanie; two great - grandchildren, Rebecca and Joshua; several nieces and nephews. Ed MelvinHALFMOON — George E. "Ed" Melvin Jr., 62, a 30 year resident of Halfmoon, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after being stricken at his home. He was born in Felton, Del., on May 15, 1940, son of the late George E. Melvin Sr. and Ethel Porter Melvin (Gallor). Ed moved to this area at a young age and was educated in both Waterford and Stillwater schools. A proud veteran, Ed had served his country by joining the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1957. One year later he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served on active duty until being honorably discharged in 1962. Ed remained in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until 1966 when he was discharged with the rank of Airman First Class. He returned to this area, from California, in 1962 and settled in Waterford where he resided until moving to Halfmoon in 1973. He was employed as a truck driver by the Grand Union Company in Waterford for 30 years and later owned and operated Melvin’s Trucking in Halfmoon for four years before retiring two years ago. He was a member of the American Legion Mohawk Post 91450 in Halfmoon. Ed loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He took pleasure in tending to his home where he could often be found cutting his lawn on his John Deere tractor or taking care of his flower and vegetable gardens. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and visiting out-of -town family members. Nothing brought Ed more pleasure than being with family and in recent years he especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s various involvements and sporting events. Ed was the beloved husband for 42 years to Margaret Fronczek Melvin; loving father of Eddie Melvin of Halfmoon, Janet Melvin of Clover, S.C., Sandra Melvin of Guilderland and the late Patricia "Pam" Palmateer; loving father-in-law of Douglas Palmateer of Halfmoon and Dana Melvin of Halfmoon; the cherished grandfather of Douglas and Kristine Palmateer, Tabitha Neuhauser and Courtney Bock and Michael and Jaimee Melvin; devoted brother of Pat Comeau and her husband, Bob of Malta, Jeff Melvin of Deleware, Linda Robinson and her husband, Kendall of Deleware, Bob Gailor and his wife, Lynne of Saratoga and Doug Gailor of Charlotte, N.C.; dear nephew of Isabelle Hughes and Mary Porter both of Deleware. She was born Aug. 13, 2002, in Malone, N.Y., at the Alice Hyde Medical Center. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Reome, 56, of Goodman Road, Malone, N.Y., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at her home, while under the loving care of her family and Hospice of the North Country, Inc. She was born in Malone on April 3, 1946, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Nancy Jones Andrews. Calling hours will be Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone.
