Published 08/13/02Julius S. MayoCHAMPLAIN — Julius S. Mayo, 68, of South St., Champlain, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at his home. He was born in Champlain on Nov. 24, 1933, son of the late Edgar and Yvonne (LaForest) Mayo. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. After being discharged from the service, he was employed by various construction companies before joining the staff at Harris Graphics where he was employed for several years. From there, he went to work for General Services Administration in Rouses Point in 1968, until his retirement in 1995. Following retirement, he worked for Meals on Wheels and World Warehouse in Champlain. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 767 and the Clinton County American Legion. He was also a long time member of the Champlain Volunteer Fire Department, the VFW Post 1418 and the Knights of Columbus Council in Rouses Point. He is survived by his wife, the former Lucy (Monette-Davison) Mayo of Champlain; two daughters, Faith Ann Davison-Hauer and her husband, William, of Newfane, Vt., and Julie Davison-Bertrand and her husband, John, of Orange City, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, Reginald Mayo and his wife, Jane, of Rouses Point; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Vivian Vallee of Plattsburgh, Veleta Parrish of AuSable Forks, and Sidnee and Wayne Garrow of Peru; three grandchildren, Jeremy Bertrand of Deltona, Fla., and Hillary and Patrick Hauer of Newfane, Vt. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Julius was predeceased by three brothers, Gordon, Maynard and Ronald, and three sisters, Bernice, Theresa and Beulah. There will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Champlain, on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Mooers Forks. there will be a reception following the burial at the American Legion in Champlain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Champlain Fire and Rescue, St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s Academy. Arrangements are with Clark Funeral Home in Champlain. Elizabeth M. "Liz" CanningDannemora — Mrs. Elizabeth M. "Liz" Canning, 89, of Smith Street, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Saranac, N.Y., on July 31, 1913, the daughter of Patrick and Grace (Burke) Carey. Liz graduated from the Plattsburgh Normal School and was an elementary teacher at Saranac Central School retiring in 1975. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association. Elizabeth enjoyed bowling, golf, reading and crossword puzzles. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. Elizabeth is survived by two sons, Bernard Canning Jr. and his companion, Lynn Foisy of Champlain, Harry Canning and his companion, Pat Carroll of Ithaca; two daughters, Patricia "Teia" and James Baker of Plattsburgh, Jane and Steven Jones of Potsdam; a sister, Ruth Swinyer of Plattsburgh; eight grandchildren, James Baker and his wife, Amy, Michelle Baker, Patrick Canning, Liza Canning, Joshua Jones, Katie Jones, Matthew Canning and Meghan Canning; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Canning Sr. on Nov. 22, 1975; and a brother, William Carey. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Dannemora. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends wishing may make donations to the Dannemora Fire Department Rescue Squad. Elmer M. DunnEllenburg Center — Elmer M. Dunn, 81, of Route 11, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Belmont on Aug. 16, 1920, the son of Edward and Mary (Sears) Dunn. He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the European Theatre. He worked at Newton Welding Supply for over 30 years and also for Nephew’s Garage in Ellenburg Depot. Elmer also owned and operated his own welding shop for many years. He was a former Highway Superintendent for the Town of Clinton and was a longtime member of the Republican Party. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8793 and the Chateaugay American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Frances Cook; three daughters and a son-in- law, Mae and John Gregory of Ellenburg Center, Jean Backus of Massena and Judy Dunn of Ellenburg Center; a sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Howard Whalen of Wassaic, N.Y., five grandchildren, Alan Backus of Michigan, Mike Backus of Ellenburg Center, Rodney Backus of Potsdam, Shane Dunn of Pennsylvania, Shannon Dunn of Mississippi; two great-grandchildren, Paul and Brian Backus of Michigan; his faithful dog "Lucky"; many "adopted" sons and daughters; and several nieces and nephews. A son, Gary; a brother, Edward; and his parents died before him. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral service in Ellenburg Depot. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Ellenburg Center. Mraz, 88, formerly of Maple Avenue, Gloversville, N.Y., passed away Aug. 6, 2002, at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, where she had resided since August of 2000. She was born Aug. 18, 1913, in Johnstown, N.Y., the daughter of John and Anna (Olynik) Samek. She was married Jan. 31, 1934, to John F. Mraz, whom passed away Oct. 6, 1979. Survivors include four children and respective spouses, Joseph and Peg Mraz, San Diego, Calif., A. Joyce and James Cross, Jay, N.Y., Richard and Nancy Mraz, Mayfield, N.Y., and Elizabeth and David Lis, Amsterdam, N.Y. She was predeceased by brothers, John, Edward and Louis Samek; sisters, Theresa Samek, Elizabeth Samek Crump and Tony Samek Gattie Sweet; a grandson, Michael Mraz; and a stepgrandson, Christopher Lis. She has 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. She belonged to Sacred Heart Church, Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America. She worked for many years at the Winig Shoe Factory. The family received friends from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home in Gloversville, where a prayer service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church of Gloversville. The Rev. David L. Tressie was the celebrant. Interment took place at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Frechette Jr., 70, of Bailey Avenue, died peacefully at his home Aug. 12, 2002. He was born in Plattsburgh on June 14, 1932, the son of John and Elsie Frechette Sr. John was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, the American Legion, Post 20 and the Veteran's of Foreign War. He served in the U.S. Air force from 1950 until retiring in 1970. Survivors include his wife, the former Andree Racette of Plattsburgh; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Melanie Frechette of Plattsburgh; one daughter, Joanne E. Frechette of Plattsburgh; one sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Hank Adams of Burlington; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Donna Frechette of Plattsburgh; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday Aug. 14, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Robert O. LaFrance, 74, of LeBoeuf Street, Tupper Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. He was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Piercefield, N.Y. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fortune-Keough-Rennell Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Wednesday at Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. Interment will follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Tupper Lake. |
