Published 08/08/02H. Gordon Burleigh IVTiconderoga — H. Gordon Burleigh IV, 72, of Champlain Avenue. passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Ticonderoga March 4,1930, the son of the late Henry Gordon Burleigh III and Evelyn (Cunningham) Burleigh of Ticonderoga. H.G. was a lifetime resident of Ticonderoga, where he was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a class of 1947 graduate of Ticonderoga High School and received his bachelor of science and Master of science degrees at SUNY Cortland. While employed as a sports reporter for the Post Star, H.G. originated the name Sentinels for the Ticonderoga School teams. H.G. taught mathematics and science at Hague Central School and Ticonderoga High School for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1994. During the Korean Conflict in Japan, Korea, and continental United States, he served in the U.S. Army with the Counter Intelligence Corps. He was initiated into Ticonderoga Elks Lodge No. 1494 in February 1955 and advanced through the chairs to serve as exalted ruler in 1963 to 1964. He was appointed to serve as district deputy grand exalted ruler by GER Frank Hise in 1969 to 1970. He served as lodge trustee, secretary treasurer of the North District P.E.R. Association for over 12 years, New York State Social and Community Welfare Committee chairman, State Americanism Committee chairman for three years, and State Scholarship Committee co-chairman in charge of competitive grants for three years. In 1983, Ticonderoga Lodge No. 1494 and the North District proudly endorsed him for the office of state president for the year 1984 to 1985. H.G. was very active in professional organizations serving as president of the Hague Teachers’ Association, president of the Warren County Supervisory District Association, and six years as delegate to the NYSTA House of Delegates. He belonged to the Hague American Legion Post and rose through, the ranks to become New York State commander of the American Legion in 1974 to 1975. He served as National American Legion vice commander in 1995 and for several years was as a representative on the American Legion National Convention Commission. Also, he was a 4th Degree member of the St. Isaac Jogues Council 333 Knights of Columbus and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Locally, he was a member of the Fort Ticonderoga Association, a life member and past president of the Ticonderoga Historical Society, a former director of the Moses-Ludington Hospital Board, and vice-president of the Mount Hope Cemetery Association. In 1974, Gov., Malcolm Wilson appointed H.G. to the Lake George Park Commission, a position he served until his death. He also held a Master’s ticket, unlimited tonnage for vessels on Lake George. H.G. was very active for many years in officiating high school football, soccer, basketball, and baseball and held offices in those associations. He also belonged to the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association. H.G. loved history, especially that of New York State and his primary hobby was boating. His knowledge of Lake George was extensive and impressive. He dedicated most of his life to helping others and was exemplary of the Elks motto, "Elks Care, Elks Share". In addition to his father, he was predeceased by one brother, John S. Burleigh. Survivors include his mother, Evelyn (Cunningham) Burleigh of Ticonderoga; two brothers, Thomas F. Burleigh of Dunwoody, Ga., and Sheridan L. Burleigh of Saratoga Springs; five sisters, Virginia B. LaPointe of Ticonderoga, Mary B. McDonald of New Hartford, Anne B. McDonald, Jane Burleigh, and Elizabeth B. Burleigh, all of Ticonderoga. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. At his request, there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor, will officiate. Michael Allan HicksonKnightdale, N.C. — Michael Allan Hickson, 43, of Knightdale, N.C., passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 6, 2002. Michael was born Nov. 28, 1958, in Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., to Dorothy Perkins Hickson and the late Alvin Jack Hickson. Michael attended and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1976. He worked at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y., as an EMT for 14 years prior to moving to North Carolina. He worked as an engineering technician at Cree, Inc., a semi - conductor Manufacturing Company in Research Triangle Park. He is survived by his wife, Lorri Brill - Hickson formerly of West Islip, N.Y.; his mother, Dorothy Perkins Hickson of Medford, N.Y.; a brother, Jay Hickson and wife, Lucy of Medford, N.Y.; a sister, Cynthia H. Miller and husband, Ronald of West Chazy, N.Y.; nephews, John and Joseph Hickson and Ronnie and Paul Miller; a niece, Kira Miller; a mother and father-in-law, Jerome and Lorraine Brill of Hendersonville, N.C., formerly of West Islip, N.Y.; and a brother-in-law, Jeff Brill and wife, Kimberly of Cleveland, Ohio. Celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, N.C. 27545 with Mr. Eddie Bing officiating. She was born in Ticonderoga, Nov. 10, 1928, the daughter of the late William and Hazel (Rafferty) Farrelly. Mrs. Mattison was a lifetime Ticonderoga resident. She was employed by the International Paper Company of Ticonderoga for many years and was a member of the company’s Quarter Century Club. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ticonderoga and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of St. Mary’s 794 of Ticonderoga. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Earl Mattison; and by two sisters, Katherine Clark and Rose Farrelly. She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie M. Trainer, 82, of County Route 39, Chateaugay, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone, N.Y. She was born in North Burke, N.Y., on May 22, 1920, the daughter of Homer and Lily (Roby) Cook. She was married to Karl O. Trainer on June 22, 1940, in Malone, N.Y. He predeceased her on April 16, 1985. Mrs. Trainer is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Barbara Trainer and Karl S. and Patsy Trainer; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Charlie Hesseltine, Beverly and Stanley Erskine and Susan and Garth Stephen; 18 grandchildren; 22 great - grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Helen T. Sprague, Mildred Trainer and Myrtle Murray Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; two daughters, Helen and Barbara Trainer; and two sisters, Lucy Swanston and Grace Omar. Mrs. Trainer graduated from Chateaugay School and Adirondack Commercial School. She was a 4-H leader and member of Farm Bureau, Chateaugay Grange, Home Extension, Eastern Star, Earlville Ladies Guild and the Earlville Methodist Church. Constance Leona FifieldPLATTSBURGH — Constance Leona Fifield N Brandywine Avenue in Schenectady and formerly of Plattsburgh died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Baptist Retirement Center in Scotia. She was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Ellenburg, N.Y. She worked at the former Neisner Brothers in Plattsburgh as office manager for many years before retiring Mrs. Fifield was a member of the Gold Star Mothers, DAV Auxillary and the American Legion Auxiliary, both in Beverly Hills, Fla. Faith United Church She was predeceased by her husband, the late Maurice Fifield, who died 1993; and two sons, Gilbert Fifield and Roderick Fifield. Mrs. Fifield is survived by a daughter, Lynda Duquette of Nashua, N.H.; a son, Richard Fifield of Schenectady; a sister, Leah Gadway of Chasm Falls; two brothers, Truman Bruso of Plattsburgh and Harley Bruso of Morrisonville; six grandchildren, Beth Susan Hodgsons, Barbara Fifield - Guzman, Richard Fifield, Joseph Duquette, Matthew Duquette and Jacob Duquette. Roger J. LaFontaineDannemora — Roger J. LaFontaine, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Dannemora on Jan. 23, 1918, the son of Vivian and Virginia (Fassette) LaFontaine. He was a correction officer at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora for over 35 years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2166 in Dannemora, the Dannemora Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a former member of the American Legion. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church. He was an avid sportsman and loved Chazy Lake. He is survived by a son, William LaFontaine of Bethel, Vt., and his best friend, Paula Beal; a daughter and son in law, Sandra and Michael Cooper of Milford, Mass.; four grandchildren, Delisa, Rebecca, Kari Lynn and Laura; and a great-grandchild, Aidan. His wife, Claire LaFontaine died in 1985. Five brothers and three sisters also died earlier. GEORGE C. WHITE, 76, of the O’Connel Road in Constable, N.Y., died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, after being stricken at his home. He was born in Malone on Sept. 6, 1925, the son of the late Clayton and Idah Peck White. There are no calling hours. Covington. Dorothea L. "Dorle" Simmons of Sentinel Road, Lake Placid, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Duisburg, Germary, Aug. 16, 1946, the daughter of Hans-Gunther and Hannalore (Kohnke) Killburger.
