Published 06/30/02Carlton Edward "Spike" Hendrie Sr.Plattsburgh — Carlton Edward "Spike" Hendrie Sr., 71, of Route 22 in West Chazy, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Peru on April 11, 1931, son of Edward and Clara (Blake) Hendrie. Carlton had been employed at Georgia Pacific in Plattsburgh. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Carlton also loved to tell stories about days gone by. Carlton is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy A. Brown of Morrisonville; four sons and two daughters-in-law, James Hendrie of Morrisonville, Carlton and llah Hendrie of Plattsburgh, Michael and Peggy Hendrie of Peru and Jonathon Hendrie of Comstock; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Maryann and Russell Macey of Keeseville, May Ellen and Richard LaFountain of Plattsburgh, Debbie and Oreal Fountain of West Chazy and Tina Marie Hendrie and her companion, Wayne Graves of Altona; four sisters; ten grandchildren; five great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. WheelerSebring, Fla., and Lake Placid, N.Y. — Bernard J. and Helen T. Wheeler of Sebring, Fla., and Lake Placid, N.Y., died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident near their home in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler were a very close and loving couple dedicated to each other and shared their love with family and friends. Helen was born in Troy, Ala., on Jan 8, 1923, the daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Osteen) Thompson. Mrs. Wheeler worked as a supervisor for the New York Telephone Company until moving to Sebring in 1978. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Wagner of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and a son, David Pierce of Metairie, La.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bernard was born in Gabriels, N.Y., on Dec. 21, 1919, the son of Joseph and Ella (Perry) Wheeler. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Wheeler was an installer and repairman for the New York Telephone Company until moving to Sebring in 1978. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Lake Placid American Legion Post 326. Bernard's first wife, the former Edrie Colby, died in Lake Placid in 1974. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Wagner of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; a son, David Pierce of Metairie, La.; a brother, Donald Beeman of Lake; a sister, Bernice Beeman of Lake Placid; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours for Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler will be held Monday, July 1, at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be an American Legion prayer service for Mr. Wheeler Monday evening at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the Clark Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the North Elba Cemetery. Steven A. BeckerTupper Lake — Steven Albert Becker, 44, of Tupper Lake, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, June 27, 2002. Steven was born on Sept. 16, 1957, in Tupper Lake, N.Y., the son of Albert and Carol (Ryan) Becker. He attended Holy Ghost Academy and graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1976. He and Lynn Charron of Tupper Lake were married on May 27, 1978, at Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. Following separation, Steve stayed in Tupper Lake where his children spent every summer. Steve worked for the State of New York at Sunmount DDSO, a job he held for 16 years. He enjoyed fishing, working on his house and taking his children out to Flatrock camp on the Rapids of the Raquette River. Steve also enjoyed four-wheeling and snowmobiling. He is survived by his parents, Albert and Carol of Tupper Lake; his former wife, Lynn of Waterford, N.Y.; one daughter, Jamie Lynn Becker of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; twin sons, Ryan Thomas Becker of the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska and Michael Steven Becker, also in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea; four sisters, Sue Johnston of Chateaugay, N.Y., Patti Dattola and her husband Paul of Tupper Lake, Judy Shumway and her husband Raymond of Piercefield, N.Y., and Cindy Larkin and her husband Tim of Tupper Lake; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 2nd, at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake with Fr. Donald Kramberg officiating. Burial will follow in St. Aphonsus Cemetery. James CrowningshieldLewis, N.Y. — James Crowningshield, 75, of Lewis, formerly of Waterbury, Conn., died at the Elizabethtown Hospital on Friday, June 28, 2002, after a long illness. He was born in Willsboro, N.Y., on July 16, 1927, the son of Daniel and Mary (Coolidge) Crowningshield. Mr. Crowningshield was a truck driver for Hubbard Hall Chemical Company in Waterbury, Conn., for over 25 years. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mabel (Spear); a son and his wife, James and Donna of Waterbury, Conn.; a son, Jerry of Lewis, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, James III, Venus Lynn and Angel Marie Crowningshield. Calling hours will be held at the Huestis Funeral Home in Willsboro, N.Y., on Sunday, June 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 1, at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Willsboro. Due to allergies, there will be no live flowers accepted at the funeral home. Michael J. WhalenSangerville, MAINE — Michael J. Whalen, 53, died June 12, 2002, in Bangor Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 13, 1949, in Rome, N.Y., and was raised in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He graduated from St. John's Academy in 1968, Paul Smith’s College in 1971 and Utah State University in 1974. He is the son of Patricia Whalen Maley and the late Paul Whalen. He was proud to be the stepson of Richard Maley. He and his beloved wife Joyce resided at 115 Jackman Corner Road, Sangerville, Maine. Mike was the wood buyer for Hardwood Products Co. LP in Guilford, Maine. Mike moved to Maine in 1974 and started his forestry and wood buying career with Diamond International Corporation. He was employed by Hardwood Products Co. in 1985, where he continued his wood buying career. He was involved with many forestry organizations: Maine Hardwood Association, where he served as president from 1987-1989 and American Pulpwood Association, where he served as president 1999-2000. He was also an active member of the Maine Forest Products Council and the local chapter of Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine (SWOAM). Mike was a dedicated member of the Guilford Area Kiwanis Club, where he earned the honor of Outstanding President in 1989-1990, and Outstanding Secretary in 1990-1991. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Sangerville and a 3rd Degree member of the Dover-Foxcroft Council of the Knights of Columbus. One of Mike's passions was deer hunting in Maine and New York. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce (Doore) Whalen of Sangerville. They were married July 13, 1991. He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Pat and Richard Maley of Florida; his sisters, Maureen and her husband John Hall of Penfield, N.Y., Loueen Whalen of Clifton Park, N.Y., Patti and her husband Irvin Reid of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Peggy and her husband Ed Hynes of Fairport, N.Y.; and his brother, David Whalen of Rochester, N.Y. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Eliza Doore of Dover-Foxcroft and Sangerville; his sister-in-law, Sandra and her husband Joel LaFerriere of Dexter, Maine; his brothers-in-law, Keith and his wife Maureen "Reene" Doore of Guilford and Glenn and his wife Pam Doore of Dover-Foxcroft; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends are invited to celebrate Mike's life at a Memorial Mass at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Plattsburgh, N.Y., on July 29, 2002 at noon.
