Robert W. Roe

Topeka, Kan. — Robert W. Roe, 81, of Plattsburgh, passed away on June 20, 2002.

He was born in Washington County, Kan., Feb. 21, 1921, to Joseph Wesley and Mildred (Boaz) Roe.

Mr. Roe proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force for 21 years until his retirement from the USAF in 1963. He was a pilot during World War II, and received various service medals. Because of his dedication to his country and to fellow military retirees, he spent many years with the American Military Retirees Association in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Most recently he was the National Executive Director at the national headquarters in Plattsburgh. He was also an active member of Lake Champlain Chapter 2- 1.

Mr. Roe was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disable American Veterans, and the American Legion.

He had many experiences many happy memories as a member of the United Methodist Church in Plattsburgh. He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America, by volunteering for many years with Troop 39 in Plattsburgh.

He married Iris Magel Anderson on Nov. 13, 1942, in Wayne, Kan. Robert and Iris were happily married and devoted to each other "until they were parted by death" when she died June 14, 1996. A daughter, Delores Ann (Roe) Roushia died Feb. 13, 1994.

After the death of his wife, he was very fortunate and honored to have a loving relationship with his companion and traveling buddy, Theta Vorse of Topeka, Kan. He is survived by two sons, Robert Eugene Roe and his wife, Priscilla (Price) Roe, Maysville, Ga., and Lawrence "Larry" Wesley Roe and his wife Susan (Matrisch) Roe, Murrieta, Ca; a daughter, Crystal Eileen (Roe) Mang and her husband, Ricardo Mang of Plattsburgh; a brother, Lonnie Roe, Belleville, Kan.; a sister, Hazel McCracken, Idaho Falls, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and eight great - grandchildren.

Following cremation in Kansas, a memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Plattsburgh on Friday, June 28, 2002, at 11 a.m. Interment will be private and at the convenience of his family.

Cylinda S. Hebert

Mooers Forks — Cylinda S. Hebert, 88, formerly of Mooers Forks, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone.

She was born in Mooers Forks on Oct. 7, 1913, the daughter of Eli and Edith (Barcomb) LaValley.

She was a member of the St. Anne’s Society in Mooers Forks and the St. Joseph’s Altar - Rosary Society in Malone.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest and Doris Hebert of Ellenburg and Gilbert and Sharon Hebert of Burke; a daughter and son-in- law, Theresa and Bob Dufrane of Malone; a son-in-law, James Grace of Constable; two sisters-in-law, Veronica Delaney of Sciota and Lee LaBarge of Mooers Forks; 15 grandchildren; 31 great - grandchildren; two great - great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Delma Hebert died in 1979. A daughter, Joanne Grace; two brothers, Eli and Hector LaValley; two sisters, Lizzie Brassard and Lena LaValley; and three grandchildren, Rick Dufrane, Terry Anne Dufrane and Steven Hebert also died earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Mooers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday from St. Anne’s Church in Mooers Forks. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery

Ann H. Johnson

Elizabethtown — Ann H. Johnson, 91, of Roscoe Road, died Sunday June 23, 2002, at CVPH in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Granville on July 27, 1910, the daughter of Michael J. and Mary (Martin) Hyland.

She received her education in Granville and Albany, N.Y. After high school, Ann worked for the N.Y. Telephone Co.

She married Harry P. Johnson on July 24, 1946, and worked with him in his Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealership in Elizabethtown and Lewis, N.Y. In later years, they owned and operated the Elizabethtown Liquor Store.

Ann best loved the times when her family, with the grandchildren and great - grandchildren, could be together.

Over the years, she participated in many variety shows in the area and always helped in the fund-raisers for many organizations.

At home Ann enjoyed playing cards and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship of the United Church of Christ and sang in the choir for many years. Ann also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, the Elizabethtown - Westport Garden Club, The Antique Car Club and the Senior Circle.

Ann is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Lee Norton of Elizabethtown; two grandsons, their wives and three great - grandsons, Barry and Joanne Norton and their sons, Matthew and Jeffrey Norton, all of Plattsburgh and Paul and Laurie Norton and their son, Nathan Norton, all of No. Reading, Mass.; one granddaughter, Jody Ann Norton of Fort Wayne , Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Harry P. Johnson died on April 11, 1988; her sister, Marion Finke; and three brothers, Gerald Hyland, Richard Hyland and Leonard Hyland also died earlier.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 28, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elizabethtown Ambulance Squad or your charity of choice.

Helen Taylor Fadden

LAKE PLACID — Helen Taylor Fadden, 99, passed away Monday, June 24, 2002, surrounded by her family. She was in the home that her husband built at 484 Old Military Road, Lake Placid.

She was born July 10, 1902, in the house next door that her father built, the only daughter of Rufus and Marietta Hammond Taylor.

She was predeceased by her four brothers, Walter, Francis, Harrison and Raymond Taylor.

Helen attended classes in the one-room schoolhouse on Cascade Road that is now the residence of Walter and Gert Hare.

As a teenager she was employed by the James Hurley family. Mrs. Hurley taught her the fine art of baking, which became a lifelong passion.

Helen married Warren Fadden on June 10, 1920, with whom she had five children. Her husband predeceased her In 1974. They built five guest cabins on their property, and operated what would be one of the first area businesses of its type, the Whiteface Cabins, for many years.

The great joys in life were her family and friends - cooking, baking, playing pinochle and canasta, hosting big family gatherings, and filling everyone around her with love, smiles, cookies, pies, and doughnuts. Her annual Halloween offerings of 12 kinds of cookies still legendary in North Elba.

She is survived by a son, Robert and his wife, Dorris of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Hunkins; a son, Richard and his wife, Kay; and daughter, Mrs. Barbara Clark and her husband, Reg, all of Lake Placid. A daughter, Eleanor Fadden, and son-in-law, Richard Hunkins, died earlier. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren; and 17 great - grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, from 7 till 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the Adirondack Community Church on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. Reverend Mark Demers, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at the family plot in the North Elba Cemetery.

Raymond E. Martin

PLATTSBURGH — Raymond E. Martin, 89, of Beekman Towers and formerly of Clinton, N.Y., died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 10, 1913, in Clinton, the son of Harry and Helen Martin. He grew up there and graduated from Clinton High School in 1932.

At an early age he learned to play saxophone. This talent had a great influence on his early years. For a time, he lived in Tupper Lake in the mid 1930’s, where he played in various establishments. It also led him to play in bands aboard trans - Atlantic ocean liners in the late 1930’s. These trips allowed him to also tour Europe right up to the beginning of World War II.

Ray entered the U.S. Army in April 1941. He served in several posts throughout the U.S. including Seattle and Fort Sill, Okla. Throughout the war he served as a bands man. In September, 1944, he married Jean Russell of Cortland, N.Y. She was the daughter of William and Florence Russell.

After the war Ray and Jean settled in Clinton, where they raised two sons and a daughter. He worked for many years as plant manager for Liberty Protective Leathers, Inc. for Clark Mills until his retirement in 1978. He moved to Plattsburgh in 1998 following his wife’s death.

In addition to being a talented musician, Ray had other interests and hobbies. In his younger years, he enjoyed travel, camping, hiking and boating. He was a member of the Clinton Historical Society and past member of the American Legion and the U.S. Power Squadron. He was a skilled craftsman who enjoyed woodworking. He created many household items and pieces of furniture for family and friends that will be treasured for generations.

Ray was also an accomplished artist. He was a well known area photographer in the 1950’s and 1960’s and a former member of the Utica Camera Club. Later, he turned his interest to painting. He dabbled in oils but was best known for his watercolors. As such, he was a founding member of the Central New York Watercolor Society and the Kirkland Art Center.

Ray is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Mary Ellen Martin of Dannemora, N.Y., and Russ and Marcia Martin of Wappingers Fall, N.Y.; a son-in-law and his wife, Jim and Diane Eaton of Mercerville, N.J.; three grandchildren and their spouses, James and Tanya Eaton of Wendell, N.C., Rick and Theresa Eaton of Wendell, N.C., and Melissa and Joe Salzano of Hamilton, N.J.; and five great-grandchildren.

Ray was predeceased by his wife, Jean in 1998; and his daughter, Holly Martin Eaton who died in 1974.

Services and Burial will be held in Clinton at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of the North Country.

The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vincent James Trombley

Ticonderoga — Vincent James Trombley, 84, of Wiley Street, passed away Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Moses - Ludington Nursing Home of Ticonderoga.

He was born in Ticonderoga, Oct. 31, 1917, the son of the late Earl and Lillian (Vradenburg) Trombley.

Mr. Trombley has been a lifelong Ticonderoga resident. He and his wife, Ruby, own and operate the White House Tourist Home in Ticonderoga. The White House has been a popular Christmas attraction for the past 41 years to local families and visitors. Mr. Trombley would display thousands of holiday Christmas lights, so brilliant, the home could be seen by commercial airplanes passing overhead

In prior years, Mr. Trombley owned and operated G-Man Trucking Service and was also a painter for the Ticonderoga Central School System.

His other hobbies included dancing and spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Trombley was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruby V. (Lash) Trombley; one son, Bruce J. Trombley of Plainville, Mass.; one daughter, Patricia A. Trudeau of Ticonderoga; and one brother, Gordon Trombley of Buffalo. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; nine great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. A funeral service will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ticonderoga, will officiate. The Rite of Committal will follow at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga.

Pauline Marcelline Bova, 76, formerly of Chateaugay, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Arrangements are incomplete through the Chateaugay Funeral Home and will be announced later.

Dorothy M. CAMPBELL, 76, of Nichols Avenue, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center.

She was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on Jan. 29, 1926, the daughter of Ambrose J. and Alice (Leary) Friedman.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at St. John’s at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.

REYNOLDS — A memorial service for the family and friends of Beryl McGillis Reynolds will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Saint Agnes Church in Lake Placid, N.Y. Beryl died at her home in Bradenton, Fla., on Nov. 5, 2001. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
