Bernard P. Gromoski

Cadyville — Bernard P. Gromoski, 74, of Park Row, died on Tuesday, June 17, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Stephenson, Wis., on June 3, 1928, the son of Leo and Minnie (Killa) Gromoski.

Bernard was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 1619 in Plattsburgh.

Bernard was a member of St. James Minor Church in Cadyville and a member of the Saranac Senior Citizens and the Lyon Mountain Senior Citizens.

Bernard is survived by his companion, Margaret "Marie" Coryer of Cadyville; a sister and brother-in-law, Bernadine and Frank Powell of Marseilles, Ill.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Marie LeClair of Saranac; three sisters-in-law, Janet Uhler of Dannemora, Lucille Carter of Chazy Lake and Marie Rascoe of Altona; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernard was predeceased by his wife, Anna Brassard Gromoski from Dannemora.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 19, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Cadyville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. James Minor Church in Cadyville. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Dannemora.

Donations in Bernard’s memory may be made to the Cadyville Volunteer Fire Department.

Samuel M. Palmer

Saranac — Samuel Matthew Palmer, 85, of Saranac, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Dannemora on Oct. 3, 1916, the son of William and Elizabeth (LaMare) Palmer.

Mr. Palmer retired as a correction officer from Clinton Correctional Facility in 1971, after 31 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Airforce and 448th Military Police Co. in Iceland.

He was a communicant of the Church of the Assumption in Redford and St. Joseph’s Church in Stuart, Fla.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, Plattsburgh and later K of C Council 6241, Stuart, Fla. He was a member of the Keeseville Elks Lodge 2072, Saranac American Legion 1618 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 125, Plattsburgh. He was a charter member of the Saranac Fire Dept., active in the formation of the Cub Pack 35, Saranac, along with being the Cub Scout Master. Mr. Palmer was also a coach for the Saranac Pee Wee Ball team.

He was an avid hunter and sportsman.

His greatest hobby was raising purebred beagles, which he trained and hunted with for over 50 years.

He is survived by his companion of many years, Catherine M. Miller; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Alan R. Palmer of Moffat, Colo., Glen E. and Chris Palmer of Houston, Texas, and Mark B. and Dorothy Palmer of Carson City, Nev.; a daughter, Joan E. McCormick of Peru, N.Y.; two nieces, Rita Martin and Sister Carol Daul; two nephews, William Daul and Richard Daul; nine grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Loretta Cromie Palmer; two sisters, Jennie Kelly and Helen Daul; and a brother, William Henry Palmer.

Calling hours will be Thursday, June 20, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O'Neill - Redden - Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, June 21, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Assumption in Redford. Burial will follow in Independence Cemetery in Saranac.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice of the North Country or to the Saranac Fire Dept.

Lois E. Noblitt

Ellenburg Center — Lois E. Noblitt, 83, formerly of the Bombard Road, Ellenburg Center, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, Plattsburgh.

She was born on June 17, 1918, the daughter of Herbert F. and Florence (Arksey) Miller.

She was married to Arnold L. Noblitt on Oct. 16, 1945, at the Mooers Wesleyan Parsonage.

Mrs. Noblitt is survived by a daughter-in-law, Juanita Noblitt of Newark, N.Y.; three sisters, Sara Bell of Lyman, S.C., Ada Bell of Chester, Vt., and Naomi McNeill of Ellenburg Depot; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her son, Arnold Lee Noblitt, Jr. in 1994.

Mrs. Noblitt attended Ellenburg High School and Brockville Seminary College in Ontario, Canada.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Ellenburg.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on June 22, 2002, at the Mooers Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Sheldon Hill Cemetery, Ellenburg Depot.

Donations may be made to Mooers Camp Meeting Association.

Arrangements are with the Chateaugay Funeral Home.

Shafeka Kazaz Durham

Malone — Shafeka Kazaz Durham, 92, of Malone, died June 17, 2002, at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone.

She was born in Beirut, Lebanon, Aug. 1, 1909, the daughter of Abez and Nazira Huchen Kazaz.

On June 18, 1925, she married Harry M. Durham in Bakefa, Lebanon. He predeceased her April 26, 1984.

She and her husband co-owned and operated Durham’s Markets is Massena, Brasher Falls and for 38 years in Malone retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Durham was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Laurentian Chapter 666 in Brasher Falls for over 50 years.

She is survived by two sons, Harry Durham Jr. of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Ramez Durham of Malone, N.Y.; three daughters, Ms. Samira Hogan of Liverpool, N.Y., Mrs. Samia Dwyer of Syracuse, N.Y., and Miss Adele Durham of Liverpool, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; 4 great - grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; a son, Hassan; as well as three brothers and two sisters of Lebanon.

Family and friends may call at the Spaulding Funeral Home in Malone Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel Friday at 10 a.m., with interment following in the Morningside Cemetery, Malone.

Stewart H. James

Essex, NY — Stewart H. James, 88, of Couchey Hill, died at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital Monday, June 17, 2002.

He was born in Essex March 16, 1914, the son of Orrie and Renabelle (Couchey) James.

Mr. James was a member of the Carpenters and Millwrights Union 1042 of Plattsburgh, charter member of the Essex Fire Company, Siberian Rod and Gun Club of Dannemora, NRA, Essex / Whallonsburgh Senior Citizens Club, Keeseville BPOE 2072 and the Oddfellows of Saranac.

He is survived by his wife, of 36 years, Patricia (Hanlon) James; sons and their wives, Stewart G. and Dianne James of Morrisonville and Douglas H. and Ina James of Ballston Lake; daughters, Alice and Charles Reynolds of Austin, Texas, and Deanna Knapp of DeWitt, N.Y.; grandchildren, Sheri, Stewart, Brian, Charles, Kevin, Claudia, Gregg, and Allen; and great - grandchildren, David, Rachel, Ian, Matthew, Kaitlyn and Ashley.

Calling hours will be held at the Huestis Funeral Home, Willsboro, on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Essex Methodist Church, Essex at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2002. Burial will follow in the WhallonsBay Cemetery.

LOUISE CHAUVIN, 90, of Stetson Avenue, Plattsburgh, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements were incomplete Tuesday evening at the O’Neill - Redden - Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

CLARA BRUNELLE, 89, formerly of Gilmour Lane, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at the Clinton County Nursing Home.

She was born in Plattsburgh on July 7, 1912.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

SYBIL I. GAY, 86, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Courtland Gardens Health Center in Stamford, Conn.

She was born June 25, 1915, in Saranac Lake, N.Y., the daughter of the late Henry Bouvia and Alida Leggett.

A graveside service was held at Fairfield Memorial Park, Stamford, Conn.

DOROTHY DANIELS, 89, of Broadway, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the Adirondack Medical Center.

She was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y., on May 7, 1913.

Calling hours will be at Fortune - Keough Funeral Home, Inc. in Saranac Lake on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, with Father Fredrick Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
