Published 5/19/02Kenyon Ludlow SmithCharlotte, Vt. — Kenyon Ludlow Smith, born Sept. 21, 1940, in St. Louis, Mo., died Friday morning after a valiant five year fight with cancer. He passed peacefully, accompanied by his wife and children, in the home he built more than 25 years ago. He had recently retired from his position as a senior staff analyst at IBM, where he had worked for the last 35 years. Prior to working at IBM, Kenyon served in the U.S. Air Force and attended the University of Vermont. Ken loved motorcycles, both racing and riding for pleasure. Susan, his loving wife of 33 years, first fell for Ken on a motorcycle trip to Laconia, N.H. He enjoyed working as a volunteer fireman in the town of Charlotte and served on the Charlotte Zoning Board. Ken had a love of the outdoors few are graced with; enjoying hunting, bird watching, camping and hiking. Many an Audubon Christmas bird count took place at the Smith household. An avid deer hunter, he spent his fall weekends in Greensboro and Groton with his close friends. He shared this love with his family; summers were spent traveling to destinations like Newfoundland and Alaska. Some of his happiest moments were spent around a campfire, tired but content after hours in the car with his family traveling across the wilds of North America. Sports were a huge part of Ken's life, from hockey to cross-country running. He guided his children through their athletic careers, encouraging and enabling them to succeed at whatever they wanted to try. Ken was also an avid supporter of the Middlebury College hockey program, the grace and speed of their style of play exemplified to him what hockey was meant to be. He is survived by his wife Susan and children, Bradford and Hannah; his father, Wallis Smith of Laconia, N.H.; three sisters, Ann Smith McLean of Laconia, Peggy Smith Bullinger of Guilford, N.H., and Barbara Smith Burhans of Columbia, Mo.; many nieces; and a cousin and his aunt.
