Rose E. Burdo

Plattsburgh — Rose E. Burdo, 96, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Mooers Forks on March 23, 1906, the daughter of Henry and Rosina (Longtin) Messeck.

She enjoyed crochet, arts and crafts and flower gardening.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Leeward Burdo and his friend, Maryann Rabideau of Plattsburgh and Wilfred and Marion Burdo of Morrisonville; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Esterine and Robert King of Altona, Valedia and Robert Seymour of Beekmantown, Doris Cody and her companion, Art Layman of Beekmantown and Betty Sears of Cumberland Head; a brother, Rudolph Messeck of Plattsburgh; two sisters, Tillie Rettinger of Beekmantown and Lena Trombley of Plattsburgh; 23 grandchildren; 33 great - grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Alfred H. Burdo died Oct. 6, 1986. A daughter, Delia Sample died in 1999. Her parents; four brothers, Jim, Napolean, Frederick and Stanley Messeck; and two sisters, Lezina Anemaet and Elsie Moore also died earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Neill - Redden - Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday from Holy Angel’s Church in Altona. Interment will follow in Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Ellenburg Depot.

Hector Joseph LaValley

Mooers Forks — Hector Joseph LaValley, 79, of Mooers Forks, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Fletcher-Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.

He was born in Mooers Forks on Oct. 7, 1922, the son of Eli B. and Edith (Barcomb) LaValley.

He was a dairy farmer for many years and was also a night auditor for EconoLodge in Plattsburgh for 9 years.

He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Mooers Forks and was a fourth Degree member of the Champlain Knights of Columbus Council.

He is survived by a son, Larry D. LaValley of Mooers Forks; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Carol Ann and Jimmy Weir of Englewood, Fla., Mary Jean LaValley of Plattsburgh, Linda M. and Rusty LaFave of Chateaugay and Grace and Terry McKinney of Westville; a sister, Celinda Hebert of Malone; five grandchildren, Shawn Crowley of Colorado, Ann Romano of Albany, Haley and Jordan LaFave of Chateaugay and Zachary Weir of Englewood, Fla.; a great- grandson, Peter John Romano; and several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Anna LaValley died in 1997. Three brothers, Eli Jr., Clifford and Ernest LaValley; and two sisters, Lena LaValley and Lizzie Brassard also died earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral service in Mooers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Ann’s Church in Mooers Forks. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Noel R. Shovan

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. —

Noel R. Shovan, 79, of Cobble Hill Road, Elizabethtown, died April 20, 2002, at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y., with his family by his side following a hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Noel was born in Elizabethtown, Aug. 17, 1922, the son of Walter and Cecilia (Wells) Shovan.

He graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1939 and attended Champlain College, in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Noel served as aviation ordnancement (T) second class in the U.S. Navy from September 1943 to April 1946. He was honored with the Victory Medal.

He married Anne C. Coffey May 1, 1948, at St. Joseph’s Church in Troy, N.Y.

Noel worked at Western Electric Company as an installer from 1947 and retired in 1984. During his 37 years he laid fiber optic cable for the 1980 Olympics and during the year 1960 he assisted in the installation Early Warning System (BEWS) off the coast of Alaska.

Upon retirement from Western Electric, he served as property assessor for many years in the Town of Elizabethtown.

Noel was a member of the American Legion, Telephone Pioneers of America and the Roaring Brook Hunt Club. He was also a retired member of the Elizabethtown Fire Department.

He was a proficient weaver, gardener and avid hunter and fisherman. He truly loved the Adirondacks. He was a creative builder and lovingly built, along with family members and friends, a Adirondack lean-to and log cabin for his family to enjoy for many generations.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Anne; and seven children, 15 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Their seven children, Sca Chauvin and two children, Christien and Jennika of Belfast, Maine, Peter Shovan and 1 child, Thomas of Saranac Lake and Elizabethtown; Cecilia Chauvin and four children, Dylan, Andrew, Ansel and Graham of Erie, Pa., Joseph and Lisa Shovan and two children, Audrey and Tanner of Lewis; Noel and Pam Shovan and three children, Brent, Emily and Kyle of Glens Falls, Claire and Paul Hahn of Granby, Conn. and Lisa and Scott Decker and three children, Noel, Caite and Jamie of Elizabethtown.

Noel was predeceased by his parents; and three sisters, Betty Hjelm and Jane Kilkenny of Franconia, N.H., and Marie Day of Clearwater, Fla.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2002, at Marvin’s Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Elizabethtown.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Joan A. Facteau

REDFORD — Joan A. Facteau, 71, of Rt. 3, Redford, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, Vt.

Joan was born in Saranac on July 7, 1930, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Liberty) Lamora.

She married Clemente C. Facteau on Nov. 26, 1949, at the Church of the Assumption in Redford. They were married for over 50 years. Clement died in December 2000.

Joan is a member of the Church of the Assumption and a member and Past President of the American Legion Post 1618 Auxillary in Saranac.

She enjoyed crafting, reading and especially her family and all her dear friends. Joan was very active in fundraising for the Assumption of Mary School.

Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Wes Facteau of Dannemora, Jim and Deb Facteau of Saranac, Jeff and Betty Facteau of Standish and Mike and Tammy Facteau of Saranac; three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Tom Rabideau of Morrisonville, Pam and Bob Terry of Redford and Sue and Glen Larson of Plattsburgh; and 11 grandchildren. She also leaves four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Gary and Mary Lamora of Lyon Mt., Ronald and Mary Lamora of Virginia Beach, Va., Francis Lamora of Plattsburgh and Gerald and Janet Lamora of Saranac; one sister, Patricia Phillips of Virginia Beach; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Joan is predeceased by two sisters, Judy Favaro and Bev Cleland; and one brother, Jimmy Lamora.

Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a Vigil service at 8:30 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1 p.m. the Church of the Assumption. Burial will follow in parish cemetery.

Donations may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.

Julie St. Louis, 43, of the Stone Bridge Way, died Friday April 19, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Brwon Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

George Plutko, 91, formerly of Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 2, 1910, the son of John and Ethel (Gaul) Plutko.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Queens. The O’Neill - Redden - Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh is in charge of arrangements.
