Marguerite (Peg) Fountain

AUSABLE FORKS —Marguerite (Peg) Fountain formerly of Broad Street, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Athens, Ga.

Peg was born July 26, 1912, in Piercefield, N.Y., the daughter of the late Eugene and Mary LaPlante.

She graduated from the Champlain Valley Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1935. She was on the hospital staff until 1937.

Peg enjoyed bowling, golfing and skiing. She also liked to teach young children the proper skiing methods. You could also hear her laughter at Fountains Meat Market in AuSable Forks, which she and her husband (Curt) owned and operated for several years.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Judy Fountain of Bogart, Ga.; three grandsons, David, Robert and Lawrence; a granddaughter, Kerstin; and one brother, Augustine of Childwold, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Fountain; a daughter, Connie in 1968; three sisters; and six brothers.

Calling hours will be held Monday evening, March 25, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer - Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Church in AuSable Forks.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Name School Endowment Fund, AuSable Forks Volunteer Ambulance Service or the AuSable Forks Volunteer Fire Department.

Gerald Joseph Duffy

Wellesley, Mass. — Gerald "Jerry" J. Duffy of Wellesley, Mass., died on March 19, 2002, after a lengthy illness. He was 77 years old.

Mr. Duffy was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He was a graduate of St. John’s University and received a Masters in Education from Plattsburgh State University.

He served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Duffy retired in 1988 as a superintendent of Taconic Hills Central School in Hillsdale, N.Y. Prior to his retirement he was also superintendent at Mayville Central School in Mayville, N.Y., and principal at Madison Central School in Madison, N.Y.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, June (O’Connor) Duffy; He is also survived by two daughters, Susan Duffy Smith of Winchester, Ma., and Patricia Barrett of Needham, Ma., and one son, Dr. Timothy Duffy of Sacketts Harbor, N.Y.; his son, Kevin Duffy of Naples, Fla., passed away in December 2001. Mr. Duffy leaves seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held for Mr. Duffy and his son, Kevin, at a later date.

Rev. Richard K. Janke

COLUMBUS N.C. — The Rev. Richard K. Janke, 76, Episcopal priest-in-charge of Good Shepherd Church, Tryon, N.C., died Friday, March 22, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

He was the son of Anna (Streib) Janke of Columbus, N.C., and the late Karl R. Janke and beloved husband of Jane K. Janke.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are four daughters, Kathryn Watson of New Zealand, N.C., Cynthia Worrall of Lake Adger, N.C., Jennifer Dean of Albany, N.Y., and Barbara Janke of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; one son, David Janke of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one brother, Vincent Janke of Montour Falls, N.Y. Also surviving are six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two nephews; and one niece.

The Burial Office with Holy Communion will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Tryon, N.C., with The Right Rev. Robert H. Johnson, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002, in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Dr., Columbus, NC 28722 and to Good Shepherd Church, P.O. Box 893, Tryon, NC 28782.

Catherine Ellen Roberts, 79, of Saranac Villa at Will Rogers, Saranac Lake, a former long time resident of Loon Lake, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at her home.

She was born Catherine Ellen Dunne on Jan. 16, 1923, one of 13 children in the James and Ada (Nolan) Dunne family of Boston, Mass.

Visitation will be at Fortune - Keough Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. A Bible vigil will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church, Bloomingdale, with father Patrick O’Reilly officiating and Reverend Mr. Frederick Mader, deacon, assisting. Burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery in Alder Brook in May.
