Published 3/9/02John R. RockPlattsburgh — Mr. John R. Rock, 75, of Bushey Boulevard and formerly of Chazy, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh. He was born in Champlain on Sept. 4, 1926, son of the late John and Cora (Bouyea) Rock. He is survived by one daughter, Donna Merrill of Elgin, Ill.; three sons and one daughter-in- law, Paul Rock of Chazy, Michael Rock of Rouses Point and Roger and Tina Rock of Chazy; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, George and Elizabeth Rock of Morrisonville and Joseph and Janet Rock of Panama, South America; five sisters, Louis Deso of Plattsburgh, Hazel Delisle of Morrisonville, Rita Werder of Rochester, Alice Shephard of St. Louis, Mo., and Ann Lapier of Rochester; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; and one brother, William Rock. There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Burial will be later this spring in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Chazy. Michael E. GarveyWillsboro — Michael E. Garvey, 74, of West Road, Willsboro, died at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, Friday March 8, 2002, after a long illness. He was born in Willsboro, N.Y., July 16, 1927, the son of Rollin and Delta (Strong) Garvey. As a young man Mr. Garvey worked at Diamond National in Plattsburgh for 12 years, he was the manager of the Adirondack Bottled Gas Co. in Glens Falls for many years, and he worked for Pinkerton Security at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. He was an avid cook specializing in pastries and baking and he loved flower gardening. He is survived by his mother, Della Garvey of Reber; his wife, Jane (Stafford) Garvey of Willsboro, whom he married in the Willsboro UMC Oct. 13, 1952; one daughter, Cynthia and her husband, Clement LaPoint of Keeseville; a grandson Patrick M. Soroka II of Willsboro; a sister and her husband, Rebecca and Carlton Wrisley of Plattsburgh N.Y.; three brothers and their wives, Paige L. and Barbara Garvey of Ovid, N.Y., Patrick Garvey of Willsboro and Wayne and Sharon Garvey of Willsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Saturday, March 9, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Huestis Funeral Home in Willsboro. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Memorial Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Willsboro Rescue Squad. Marvin E. BriggsNew Haven, VT. — Marvin E. Briggs, 75, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at his home in New Haven, Vt. He was born Nov. 5, 1926, in New Haven, the son of Chester Arthur Briggs and Jennie (Armell) Briggs. He is survived by his twin sister, Marion (Briggs) Elliott of Fort Covington, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Ralph Briggs, Glenn Briggs and Sheldon Briggs; and his sister, Genevieve (Briggs) Wright. He received his high school diploma from Beeman Academy in New Haven and then attended the University of Vermont. His education at the University of Vermont was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Navy. After completing his service in the U.S. Navy, he returned to the University of Vermont, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He furthered his education at Potsdam State University, where he received his master’s degree. He taught elementary school in South Orange, N.J., for several years, retiring in the late 1980s. He was an accomplished pianist. He volunteered his time working with piano students from University of Vermont. He also volunteered for other activities at University of Vermont. At the time of his death, he was organist for the Middlebury Christian Science Fellowship. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury, Vt. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury, Vt., on Saturday, March 16, 2002, at 2 p.m. Interment will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, Vt.
