Published 2/4/02Bernard R. McCormickMORRISONVILLE — Bernard R. McCormick, 75, of 6 Twin Birch Lane, and formerly of Saranac Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his home. Born in Saranac Lake on July 23, 1926, he was the son of Bernard and Ella May (Gratto) McCormick. He married Isabel J. Fountaine on April 10, 1950 at the Notre Dame Church in Malone, by the Rev. Arquette. Mr. McCormick was a lifetime resident of Saranac Lake and moved to Morrisonville in 1996. He attended St. Bernard’s School and later Saranac Lake Central High School. He entered the United States Marine Corp. in 1944 and served until 1946. Mr. McCormick worked for Branch and Callahan and Gendron Lumber as a mason. He also was a self-employed contractor in Saranac Lake for many years. In 1969 he was employed by the New York State Department of Corrections. Mr. McCormick received his bachelor’s degree in teaching from Elmira College and had worked as a shop instructor at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. He retired in 1986. Mr. McCormick enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and boating. He is survived by his wife, Isabel J. McCormick of Morrisonville; three sons, Richard P. of Saranac Lake, Charles P. of Anchorage, Alaska, and Bernard M. of Saranac Lake; five daughters, Donna M. Lasell of Pawleys Island, S.C., Ella Jane Straub of Governeur, Deborah A. Bates of Bloomingdale, Joan M. McCormick-Washburn of Rutland, Vt., and Betsy Latham of Saranac Lake; two sisters, Mary Stoffel of Cape Coral, Fla., and Claire Farrington of Los Lumas, N.M.; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Thomas Alan McCormick, and one brother, Russell McCormick. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. Private family funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake in May. Friends wishing to remember Bernard R. McCormick may make memorial contributions to the Carmelite’s in care of the funeral home. DONALD P. HELKE, 73, of 30 Greenwood St., Lake Placid, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Uihlein Mercy Center. He was born in Saugerties, N.Y., July 30, 1928. He married Martha Gadwaw on May 7, 1949. She predeceased him. Visitation will be held at Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid on Monday, Feb. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Eustace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Judson Peeler officiating. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake at a later date. ANDREW ELMER, 10, of Ryan Road in Chateaugay, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Malone on Dec. 17, 1991, the son of Timothy and Angela (Yaddow) Elmer. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Chateaugay Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Wednesday, Feb. 6 in St. Edmund’s Church, Ellenburg, with the Rev. Joseph Weelock officiating. Spring burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery on Salmon Street, Fort Covington. Funeral arrangements are through Chateaugay Funeral Service, Chateaugay.
