Chester W. Arthur

Keeseville — Chester W. Arthur, 80, of Grove Street in Keeseville, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Schenectady, Oct. 22, 1921, the son of Clarence W. and Elsie (Burgess) Arthur.

Mr. Arthur served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946.

He married the former Doris Watson in 1945 in England.

Chet retired from Horace Nye Nursing Facility in Elizabethtown following several years of service as an administrator.

He was past master and a 50 year member of the AuSable River Lodge 149, F & AM in Keeseville and a charter member of both the Keeseville Elks Lodge 2072 and the Plattsburgh Moose Lodge 2390.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Arthur of Keeseville; one son, Colin Arthur of Keeseville; one son-in-law, Robert Timosevich of Keeseville; and three granddaughters, Wendi Horan of Florida, Kelly Goudy of Keeseville, and Patience Mosier of Florida.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Dena Timosevich August 12, 1999.

There will be no public calling hours. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Keeseville.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Arrangements are with the Hamilton Funeral Home in Keeseville.

Andrew I. Garrant

Rouses Point — Andrew I. Garrant, 80, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born in Plattsburgh on July 29, 1921, the son of Arthur and Sadie (Ferguson) Garrant.

Andrew was a veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 through 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was employed at Ayerst Laboratories in Rouses Point for 46 years.

Andy was awarded a certificate of appreciation for numerous years of outstanding and dedicated service to the Rouses Point Fire Department. Memberships include, American Legion, 94th Infantry Division, Association and past member of the Plattsburgh Lodge of Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Tina (Jubert) Garrant; son, Jeffrey; a close family friend, Dean Pratt; as well as many other relatives and close friends.

At Andy’s request, there will be no calling hours. Private funeral services and burial will take place in the spring.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Rouses Point Fire Department Rescue Squad or the H.K. Freedman Renal Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements are with the Clark Funeral Home.

Robert N. Palmer

QUEENSBURY — Robert N. Palmer, 97, formerly of Ridge Road in Queensbury and Bucks Corners Road in Saranac, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Hallmark Nursing Centre in Queensbury.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1904, in Manchester, N.H., the son of Herbert H. and Nellie (Crowell) Palmer

He attended elementary schools in Champlain, Kings Bay, Brooklyn and later Plattsburgh High School.

Mr. Palmer became a printer in Binghamton, later joined the Plattsburgh Local No. 769, International Typographical Union, where he was employed by the Plattsburgh Press and Clinton County News before going to Keeseville to work at the Republican. He also worked at Williams Press and the Knickerbocker in Albany. In New York City, Mr. Palmer was employed in Job Shops, Newspapers and Book Shops until World War II.

He then worked for Pratt & Whitney Co.; transferring to Republic Aviation on Long Island, because his family was there.

Following the war, Mr. Palmer worked for the Press in Long Island, where he retired in 1964.

He and his wife returned to Clinton County and purchased a home on Bucks Corners Road in Saranac, where they lived for 21 years.

Mr. Palmer joined the United Methodist Church, in Saranac from 1964 to 1985, and was a member of the board of trustees as well as being on many committees.

He was the founder of the Saranac Senior Citizens Club, assisted by his wife, Hannah, and was the club president for seven years. The club was instrumental in getting the Town Hall built.

He was given a "Life Membership" at the tenth anniversary meeting.

Mr. Palmer also taught chair caning at Plattsburgh State University for a few terms.

He was on the advisory committee for the Office of the Aging (once going to Legislature) and was given an achievement award plaque by the Legislature; served on many committees aiding the senior citizens, was a member of the advisory board to Boy Scouts, the Saranac Community Development Center Advisory Board, serving as chairman; served on the board as a chairman of the Joint Council of Economic Opportunity, and was the first chairman, serving for years on the advisory committee for Retired. Senior Volunteer Programs. He was a delegate for Clinton County to the New York State Senior Action Council and served as chairman of Region VI.

Mr. Palmer is predeceased by his wife, Hannah, who died in 1994; and by one daughter, (a twin), Roberta N. Maidment, Who died in 2001.

Survivors include one son, Richard N. Palmer (a twin) of Nikomas, Fla.; two daughters, Sherry Campbell of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Carla Gordon of Waterford, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great - grandchildren. Mr. Palmer is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Marcia Palmer; and a grandson, Michael Bennett, with whom he lived and who cared for him for many years.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Independence Cemetery in Saranac. Calling hours will be private at Stafford Funeral Home Inc. in Lake George.

Theresa A. Patnode

MALONE — Theresa A. Patnode, 74, of Maple Ridge Apartments in Malone and formerly of Churubusco, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone.

She was born in Montreal, Quebec, on Dec. 1, 1927, the daughter of Edouard and Diana (Trombly) Gervais.

She was married to Gerald Patnode on April 20, 1950, in Saint-Eusebe - de - Vercil Church in Montreal.

Mrs. Patnode is survived by her husband of 51 years; a sister Yvette Gervais of Montreal, Quebec; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Rita Gervais.

Mrs. Patnode was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Churubusco and later attended St. Joseph Church in Malone.

Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, with Rev. Howard McCasland officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Immaculate Heart Cemetery in Churubusco .

Donations in her memory may be made to Churubusco Fire Dept.

Wayne Merrihew, 52, of the Meadowbrook Health Care Facility and formerly of Prospect Avenue, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Meadowbrook Health Care Facility in Plattsburgh.

He was born on May 5, 1949, son of Donald A. and Nathalie (LaValley) Merrihew.

Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be later in the year in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
