Elmer R. DuRoss

Port Henry — Elmer R. DuRoss, 77, of Route 1 in Cheever, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at his home.

He was born on July 1, 1924, in Port Henry, N.Y., the son of Ernest and Mary (Kingdollar) DuRoss.

Elmer was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Florence (Barnes) DuRoss of Cheever; his sons, Brad DuRoss and Brian DuRoss of Witherbee, Kevin DuRoss of Port Henry and Elmer DuRoss Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his daughter, Corinne DuRoss of Bristol, Vt.; a brother, Elmer DuRoss of Port Henry; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Port Henry. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in the spring.

Walter John Hilderbrandt

Saranac — Walter John Hilderbrandt, 87, of the Nashville Road, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Hoboken, N.J., on June 7, 1914, the son of Walter Hilderbrandt.

Walter joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1933. Captain Hilderbrandt, a 28 year career officer, distinguished himself in World War II, landing at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He later served in Korea at the Chosin Reservoir. His decorations were worn with pride and justly deserved.

After his military service the family moved to Saranac in 1968, where Walter worked at Clinton Correctional Facility, retiring after 13 years.

Walter was a member of St. John's Church in Plattsburgh. He did volunteer work for RSVP at the public library and donated time to the Food Shelf.

Walter is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Virginia Lee (Doughty) Hilderbrandt of Saranac; four children and two in-laws, Walter John Hilderbrandt Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Anne and James Lamerson of Prescott, Ariz., Agnes and Gary Cornelius of Dannemora, N.Y., and Christopher Hilderbrandt of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren, April Lamerson, Evelyn Cornelius, Clara Cornelius, Regina Cornelius, Douglas Hilderbrandt and Virginia Hilderbrandt; and three great-grandchildren, Allasandra, Ethan and Aleese.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at 2 p.m. from St. John's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.

Ruby B. Hayes

Westport — Ruby B. Hayes, 79, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown.

She was born in South Bombay, N.Y., on Oct. 1, 1922, the daughter of Vernon and Luella (Western) Clary.

Ruby worked for many years as a nurse’s aide at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown. She enjoyed her home, family and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by one daughter, Connie Hayes of Westport; three sons, Barry Hayes of Mineville, Gary Hayes of Westport and Hal Hayes of Brookfield; a brother, Roger Clary of Westville; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Hayes and a brother, Rubin Clary.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Jan. 15th from 1 to 3 p.m. at W.M. Marvins Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service will be conducted by Georgianna Anson at 3 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in the spring. A reception will be held after the services at the Hayes family home in Wadhams.

Barbara Olive Stevenson

Westport — Barbara Olive Stevenson, 88, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Elizabethtown, N.Y., on Jan. 22, 1913, the daughter of Ross and Adeline (Jaquish) Lamb.

Barbara was the town clerk for the Town of Westport for many years and worked as a legal secretary. She was a graduate of Plattsburgh Business School and taught ceramics at Westport Central School for several years. She enjoyed her home, writing, cooking and traveling.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Enzina Stevenson of East Hartford, Conn., and Thomas Stevenson of Virginia; four grandchildren and their spouses, Richard and Crystal Stevenson, Thomas and Heidie Stevenson, Amber Stevenson and Amanda Stevenson; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Monday, Jan. 14th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the W.M. Marvins Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service will be conducted by Georgianna Anson at 7 p.m. following the calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Westport Emergency Squad, Westport NY 12993.

Edna M. Gleason, 86, of Smith Street in Plattsburgh, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Plattsburgh on Oct. 22, 1915, the daughter of the late Robert and Anna (Sorrell) Darrah.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at 10 a.m. from the Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Plattsburgh.

Pearl L. McFaddin, 87, formerly of Route 122 in Constable, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Potsdam Community Nursing Home.

She was born in Constable on June 1, 1914, the daughter of Henry and Julia (Bova) LaFayette.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church in Constable, with Rev. Garry Giroux officiating. Burial will be in the spring in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.
